Sam Foster (Ewan McGregor) is a young psychiatrist who is filling in for a colleague on leave. Among his new patients is Henry Letham (Ryan Gosling), a young art student who hears voices and is seriously contemplating suicide. This resonates strongly with Sam, who rescued his painter girlfriend, Lila (Naomi Watts), from a wrist-slashing. The extremely volatile Henry begins to threaten Sam's hold on his own sanity, as he races against time to figure out the truth about Henry's past, the source of his troubles, and the cause of the seemingly unexplainable things that are happening to both of them. Sam investigates the ghostly figures of Henry's life, including Athena (Elizabeth Reaser), the girl Henry loved, and also his parents (Bob Hoskins and Kate Burton), uncovering ever more disturbing idiosyncrasies along the way.

Nothing Like Donnie Darko!

Millsey from Hastings, 18th December, 2006

I see alot of reviews comparing Stay with Donnie Darko, but the films are nothing alike, Donnie leaves you scratching your head and thinking did I enjoy that or not?, where Stay (like The Machinist) lets you know what is was all about in the last 10 mins and knowing exactly what you thought of the film. The majority of the film and the acting was great, it was the ending that disappointed me, it had so much more potential to end as cleverly as it began. My advice is if you want a film that will baffle you but ultimatly not be that hard to understand this is for you, if you prefer a film where its all laid out on a plate and there's no surprises then maybe a Stallone film is more your cup of tea. Get it, and enjoy!

Mindbending thriller? They are spot on! Dreadful!!

A Customer from leeds, 5th May, 2006

Don't bother watching this awful film. Another film where I wanted to be entertained, instead I was throughly confused! The film may be geared towards those who understand rocket science, who knows? Bob Hoskins should make better choices in future. As for Ewan McGregor, his hairstylist and wardrobe mistress should be sacked! God knows who got him dressed! Ewan admits the film wasn't entirely successful on release in america. He defends the fact audiences found it impossible to follow. Better luck next time, Ewan!

Very, very wierd!

Waddy123 from from Todmorden, 27th July, 2006

Great performances, best performance from Ewan McGregor since 'Trainspotting'.

However the film had a very complicated plot which will confuse lots of people. The film is not very scary either with little suspense of jumps. Excluding all of that it was quite a good film but too smart for its own good. People, who liked 'Donnie Darko' or 'The Manchinist', will most probably like this film.

The Ending Makes It Worth the Wait!

Paul from Maidstone, 11th July, 2006

This film confused me all the way to the end but kept me intrigued at the same time. It's a little like Donnie Darko in that my initial reaction was total bewilderment but I think if I watch it again (which I certainly will!) things will make more sense. Having said that, the ending let's you go away feeling content and then you can reflect on what a good film it actually is!

waste of 2 hours

very briefly: a painfull reminder of up its own arse film making.Ewan mcgregor's inability to convince you that he is real derails an already pointless film.By creating no empathy between viewer and characters, by the time the end comes you couldn't give a stuff. Avoid unless your perfect cinema date is art student films of adolescence pretension

Exactly! Jacob's Ladder springs to mind

A Customer from England, 12th September, 2009

I wondered what was going on for most of this film: was it a simply psychological thriller reminiscent of 'Identity' or 'Hide and Seek', aka split personality type plot? At the climax however, it-in my opinion-was VERY reminiscent of 'Jacob's Ladder'... Ryan Goslig's character was simply, in his last moments before he died, living a life that never will be, utilising the characters surrounding him after the tragic car crash and processing his guilt/final thoughts as his life slipped away from him. A bit vague in explanation but I still enjoyed it... not sure I'd have understood it w/o having formerly seen 'Ladder' however...

Avoid this cliched claptrap

itstinks from , 7th September, 2009

Read reviews of this when it first came out at the cinema and thought avoid, should have stuck with that. Over-directed nonsense with a plot made up of snippets from various other thrillers, you hope there will be an original twist to make it all worthwhile but frankly my heart sank while watching it and the twist was as weak as I expected. The last watchable movie McGregor made was Young Adam (a superior film in every way) a low-budget indie British movie, I cannot remember the last decent Hollywood film he has made (including STar Wars). His american accent is as wild as his hair and even stalwarts such as Naomi Watts and Bob Hoskins seem to have done this to buy themselves new cars. The direction tries to create a hectic dream/nightmare type rythm but apart from some cute segues between scenes (although you even get that in DFS commercials nowadays) the rest is just a mess. The fact that someone thought that Forster was the right person for Quantam of Solace gives further proof of the low level of intelligence that Hollywood has. You have been warned.
