Adapted from Josephine Hart's spare novel by British screenwriter David Hare and French director Louis Malle, this brooding erotic drama concerns the obsessive sexual relationship between an English politician and his son's lover. Stephen Flemming (Jeremy Irons), an up-and-coming member of Parliament, has a beautiful and loving wife, Ingrid (Miranda Richardson), and two children, including son Martyn (Rupert Graves), a successsful journalist. Sparks fly, however, when Stephen meets beautiful art-world denizen Anna Barton (Juliette Binoche), Martyn's new girlfriend. A measured, seemingly passionless man who believes that life can be controlled, Stephen suddenly finds himself unable to resist brief but intense liaisons with the mysterious, melancholy Anna. Eventually she explains the palpable air of sadness that hangs over her: When she was 15, her beloved older brother committed suicide because he could not possess her. Remember, Anna warns Stephen, Damaged people are dangerous. They know they can survive. Drawn to Anna and the passion she engenders in him, Stephen tries to justify his betrayal by telling himself Martyn isn't serious about Anna; he is stunned, then, when the two announce their engagement. On the advice of Anna's mother (Leslie Caron), who sees right through the charade, Stephen tries to break things off. But soon the affair resumes with full force, eventually destroying several lives. Although Damage's stark, frank sex scenes were trimmed to attain an R rating for theatrical release, the original, uncut version is available on video and DVD. Richardson received an Oscar nomination for her work.~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

Radio Times

Louis Malle, directing his first English-language film since his return from America to France, employs an almost leisurely (but always exact) camera to highlight the emotional centre of this traumatic tale. Taken from Josephine Hart's bestseller by scriptwriter David Hare, the explosion of emotion is muted by moments of implausibility, caused by some widely varying acting styles. Whereas Miranda Richardson crumbles believably as the spurned wife, Juliette Binoche, as the object of an MP's lust, simply pouts seductively, while Jeremy Irons, as the naughty politician, spends too much time behaving like a startled rabbit.

Compelling erotic drama

Philip Concannon from London, 24th May, 2004

'Damage' is the story of Stephen Fleming(Jeremy Irons) a member of parliament who seems to have it all, supportive wife, succesful son, great career prospects. However, when he meets Anna(Juliette Binoche) he willingly risks it all as they begin a passionate affair. Matters are further complicated by the fact that Anna is about to marry Fleming's son.

Louis Malle's drama is a blistering examination of a man giving in to lust. Malle doesn't explain the source of their attraction and simply follows their increasingly torrid and obsessive affair, which has devastating consequences. Irons and Binoche have meaty roles to get their teeth into here and respond with the kind of performances we've come to expect from these excellent actors. Miranda Richardson is also superb as Fleming's bewildered wife.

Malle avoids being too explicit and instead concentrates on the psychological and emotional impact of the relationship. The result is a powerful, daring, superbly acted drama.

Avoid

When I saw this film the audience - those that hadn't walked out - were laughing out loud at the dramatic climax. I won't give the end away, but suffice to say it's as ludicrous as the sex scene, in which Jeremy Irons bangs Juliette Binoche's head on the floor. Not much of a turn-on, in my book.

Without a word of exaggeration, this is one of the worst films I've ever seen.

Enthralling

HenriDavid from Somerset, 18th May, 2006

A wonderful and intelligent film about sexual obsession. The way the tension builds up towards the inevitable trgedy is masterfully handled by Louis Malle, one of the greatest directors of all time.

Zzzzz

A Customer from Stoke-on-Trent, 9th June, 2009

Awful. I watched it for half an hour and then after Jeremy Irons spent a whole day and half the night waiting behind the hedge outside Juliette's apartment until her visitor had gone I just laughed and turned it off. As if somebody in his position would turn his life upside down for a quickie on the streets of Paris ! And where did she say she was going at 7am in the morning as her partner slept?! Quite unbelievable. I'm all for romance and infatuation but this was ridiculous.
