Namcos latest Ace Combat offering is nattily subtitled Squadron Leader, though unfortunately no X-Wings are on offer.

Set in the year 2010, the human race seemingly hasnt yet learnt that squandering massive sums of money on building death machines while half the world starves is unacceptable. A shame, but still, it makes for a good videogame. Anyway, on a small island in the ocean that divides the global superpowers of Osea and Yuktobania, an entire military base is on red alert. Early today, the 108th Tactical Fighter Squadron was scrambled to intercept an unidentified aircraft, but the entire squadron was ruthlessly decimated. As a fighter pilot in a newly formed squadron, you are called into action to protect the nation of Osea. As you take to the skies, the story begins to unfold

Pumped yet? Indeed! So its time to slip into the unlicensed RayBans as Namco again offers up another PlayStation 2-squeezing rendition of mid-air flight fighting. This latest iteration offers a beefed-up version of the series. As well as the trademark Ace Combat graphical craft, Squadron Leader offers 50 licensed aircraft from the worlds premier death-from-above manufacturers.

Its also worth pointing out that the environments in which you get to fulfil your Tom Cruise fantasies are somewhat more colourful than in previous Ace Combat games. Whereas in the past you might have found yourself over the sea. For an hour. Then over a green island. For an hour. Well, now you have canyons and deliciously-rendered cities to dogfight above to your hearts content.

Too complicated for me!

A Customer from Newcastle upon Tyne, 8th November, 2007

Serious gamers may enjpy the challenge of this game but I found its learning curve frustrating and unenjoyable and gave up after 30 mins of attempting playing the game.

Great fun

A Customer from Grantham, 4th February, 2008

I love the ace combat series and to get straight to the point, this is the best of the lot (including the new 360 effort) Great selection of aircraft and missions and the thing that really makes the game is that there are actually meaningful characters in this one who do a good job of keeping the story more interesting. Controls are as you would expect from an ace combat game, a nice blend between arcade and simulation that works very well. Graphics are fine, some nice scenery to ignore as your dog fighting. Overall, very good game and certainly worth a rent although if your like me, you'l have to buy it:)

ace combat !!

A Customer from north west . england, 25th July, 2006

i rented this having played all the other ace combat games and having recently rented the dissapionting 'aces of war' wasnt dissapointed with this title. everything from the outset draws you into the story and makes you want to pursue each mission just to get further in the game, sure sometimes it does get a little repetative but with the option to buy and sell aircrafts and giving out order's to your wingmen i never felt bored just wanted to get on and finish it... the last level is reminisent of star wars and when you destroy the 'SOLG' its proper ace fighting at its best.

This game totally delivered what I wanted!!! The campaign mode is the best which allows you to buy more planes as you complete more missions. I'm still enjoying playing it now!!! Totally Ace!!!
