You know Tim Schafer. The zany fellow has been responsible for some of the highlights of videogame history, most notably in the adventure genre. Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle and Grim Fandango all spring readily to mind, and thats precisely the subject of his newest project: the mind.

The Psychonauts, you see, are an organisation that specialise in solving the problems posed by peoples brains. But they often attack the trouble at its root by actually exploring the minds of the disturbed patient, literally.

At least, thats the special skill of new Psychonauts recruit Raz, short for Rasputin, who comes to the international Psy-spy training camp. His arrival coincides with a series of abductions of students at the boot camp for their gifted brains. But is it a huge mutant lungfish from the nearby lake that has developed a taste for grey matter? Or is there something more sinister at work?

Meet a whole host of extraordinary characters and guide Raz through thirteen levels in this 3rd person action adventure. 3 levels take place in the real world, and the rest take place in the darkest recesses of peoples brains. Beautifully bizarre environments are there to explore, filled with tightropes, trapezes, ladders and other adventure playground style apparatus. Razs abilities are no less inventive, and he can use thought bubbles as an improvised skateboard, shield or hot air balloon.

Gameplay is a mix of non-linear, long term objectives, and puzzles that cleverly tailor themselves to the ability of the player. There are plenty of sub-plots and other tangents to go off at, and plenty of psychic abilities to learn, like clairvoyance, pyrokinesis, telekinesis and invisibility. Psychonauts is unique, creative, colourful and very humorous. We could use more games like this.

Enter my mind...

Chris McKie from Tadley, England, 2nd May, 2006

Psychonauts is pretty much a standard platform-adventure game but with a mighty twist. You have special Psychonaut powers that allow you to manipulate things around you. For instance, you can set things on fire, utilise telekinesis and even levitate. However, this is not the twist. Entering the bizarre minds of others is a pretty appealing prospect. Psychonauts will let you do just that. Each stage is actually set inside somebody’s mind. Even better, some of these people are members of an insane asylum! Once inside their mind it's your job to clean up any emotional baggage and get rid of those pesky mental cobwebs. Basically, you have to fix these poor people! Each of the stages is absolutely unique. You'll enter the mind of a disco obsessed Psychonaut lecturer, the paranoid conspiracy-ridden mind of Boyd (a local guard) and you'll even find yourself participating in a crazy board game with none-other than Napoleon Bonaparte! The creativity and originality of each stage is what makes this game so appealing. It's very hard to get bored. The ‘layered’ nature of the game is also highly amusing. For instance, you’ll enter a stage (in the ‘real’ world), like any other game but it’s then your job to probe further into each of the stage’s characters, fixing their minds, which then allows them to help you back in the 'real' world. I haven't even mentioned the main story and the fact that there are literally hundreds of lines of dialogue that you can prompt at any time by simply walking up and talking to people. Either way, I hope you're interested enough to find out a little more about this great game and, of course, rent it.

Psycho-freakin-awesome!

Lex from from Edinburgh, 13th August, 2009

I missed this game when the hype was out - Now it's nearly 6 years old, and for a system no-one sells. I put it on my list because I heard it was one of those 'Must Play' games. It arrived out of the blue, and I was awed. Even these days, playing it emulated on an Xbox 360, it is clearly one of the best games of it's time and easily stacks up to modern titles in terms of gameplay and storytelling. Simply fantastic. Well worth a spot on your rental list.

Brilliant!

A Customer from Droitwich, England, 8th May, 2007

When I bought this game I found it quite hard to get into at first because the first part was giving information about the collectibles on the game. But when i got into the first persons hmind it was brilliant. The game is so unique there is not another game like it. You enter peoples mind to retrieve information and to solve their personal issues in exchange for a favour to help you progress through the game. Throughout the game you learn different skills like telekinesis, pyrokinesis, clairvoyance, invisibilty, levitation and more. Truly a great game.
