Bob Rafelson has stated that this is the final part of an informal trilogy he started with "Five Easy Pieces" and continued with "The King Of Marvin Gardens". In the three, Nicholson has now played son, brother and father. In this one, Nicholson is a wealthy wine dealer who has distanced himself from his wife with his philandering and from his son with his negligence. After he steals a diamond necklace with the help of a safecracker partner, Victor, things start coming apart. His wife sets out to interrupt what she thinks is another one of his weekend dalliances, but is really his trip to pawn the jewels.

Halliwell's Film Guide

A grim and violent thriller with some effective performances; but its portrait of a greedy and dysfunctional family leaves little lasting impression.

A Gripping Thriller.

Coming across this film was a joy because it's was very enjoyable and totally gripping until the final few minutes. Jack Nichloson steals a necklace from the house he works in alongside his mistress Jennifer Lopez but when the jewels disappear after his wife finds out about his unfaithfulness and takes her son Stephen Dorff with her, he brings his pschyoatic but near dead Michael Caine along with the ride to find the jewels, take his mistress and live a another life. But things arren't simple with twists and turns, deaths and a last confrontation between stepson and stepfather. I thought it was very well done, though a little too long for a film like this. The pefomances are good from Nicholson, Caine and Dorff but Jennifer Lopez was the weak link of this film with her poor acting and a annoying accent. In all, it's a gripping film and recommended to anyone who has a region 1 player or likes a good movie to take you away for a while.
