The redoubtable Morgan Freeman returns as Washington, DC police detective Alex Cross, the master profiler, in an exciting thriller based on James Patterson's novel, ALONG CAME A SPIDER. The film is actually a prequel to the box office blockbuster KISS THE GIRLS. Here, Cross is pursuing a brilliantly twisted kidnapper who's holding the daughter of a U.S. senator. When the kidnapper, Gary Soneji (the effectively sinister character actor, Michael Wincott), who had posed as a schoolteacher for two years before making his move, contacts Cross and taunts him, but makes no demands for money, Cross starts to piece together a psychological profile. With the help of a clever and beautiful Secret Service agent, Jezzie Flannigan (Monica Potter), Cross begins his investigation of the bizarrely elaborate and ruthless crime. But as is usual with Patterson's work, just when Cross (and the audience) thinks everything is resolved, a stunning twist unfolds. Acclaimed director Lee Tamahori (THE EDGE, ONCE WERE WARRIORS) is adept at staging the action, including a tense chase through Union Station during rush hour, and Freeman's pensive presence lends an extra level of gravity to this darkly entertaining thriller.

Radio Times

In this suspenseful prequel to Kiss the Girls, Morgan Freeman resumes his role as detective and psychologist Alex Cross. Cross is coming to terms with the death of his partner when a kidnapper (Michael Wincott) leaves a piece of evidence in his postbox. A senator's daughter is being held to ransom, and the Secret Service agent who should have been protecting her (Monica Potter) volunteers to assist Cross. Based on the first of James Patterson's bestselling Cross novels, the film boasts a strong cast that's assuredly led by Freeman as the older, wiser figure among them. Yet the pace of the film seems forced in order to fit in too many plot contrivances.

Morgan Freeman is the man

NEEDTOGETALIFE from Cheshire, 16th March, 2004

This was a fairly average film with surprises, which kept the viewer tuned in.
I finished the book last week so decided to rent the film which is always a mistake (so no one to blame but myself!).

The plot didn’t keep pace with James Patterson’s original and thus seemed ‘clunky’ and implausible. Several threads, which Patterson used, were not used in the film, and although sometimes it is obvious that it would not be possible to do so in the film.

In this case some of the things that were left out would have helped the plot roll along a little smoother and explain the characters’ actions and reactions – without spoiling the film I can’t really elucidate any further. Patterson’s novels’ endings always frustrate me and this was no exception. The film didn’t particularly improve that either.

It would be very unfair to say I was disappointed because I wasn’t. Average is the best description I can come up with. Morgan Freeman of course is superb and kept it worth my while as I think his acting talents are excellent. However, for some reason whilst reading it I pictured someone younger – Denzel Washington? Don’t erase it from your rental queue but maybe don’t leave it at the top!!

A great film, I enjoyed it all and was not impressed when it finished, I would enjoy further films like this.

Morgan Freeman does a brilliant job once again and this is a good a film with a complete story not something we see too often.

A ho-hum way to pass a couple of hours

A Customer from UK, 3rd November, 2004

I guessed the 'twist' at the end pretty early on, and as I'm not normally any good at that, I can only surmise that this film is predictable. Not a patch on 'Kiss the Girls' and Morgan walks through this one. Three stars since I'd watch him read the telephone directory, but there's not much else to redeem this film.
