This remake of Mel Brooks' 1968 film features Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick in the roles that they originated in the smash Broadway adaptation of the original film. Broadway producer Max Bialystock (Lane) is famous for his spectacular opening night flops. Leopold Bloom (Broderick) is an uptight accountant who virtually discovers gold while reviewing Max's books. When Leo realises that you can actually make more money with a flop than with a hit, the two team up and begin a search for both the worst script and the worst director they can find to ensure failure. The script selection seems easy when the duo stumble upon SPRINGTIME FOR HITLER, an homage to the Fuhrer penned by Franz Liebkind (Will Ferrell), a German sympathetic to the Nazi cause. Convinced that the script will incite outrage, the duo needs a bad director to seal the deal. Campy director Roger DeBris (Gary Beach) and his assistant (Roger Bart) fit the bill perfectly. But when their scheme fails, Max and Leo find themselves with the worst possible outcome: a hit. To make matters worse, Franz is just a little peeved that Hitler was depicted disrespectfully and he has a gun. Will Max and Leo survive the playwright's wrath? Will they go to jail for cooking the books? And will Leo ever submit to the advances of sexy Swedish receptionist/actress Ulla (Uma Thurman)? Directed by stage director Susan Stroman, making her feature film directorial debut, this riotous romp features lots of laughs from the major players, as well as brief appearances by Jon Lovitz, Michael McKean, and Richard Kind. Lane and Broderick make it easy to understand why the show was an unprecedented hit on Broadway, and Ferrell is a scene-stealer as Liebkind.

Not a patch on either the original film OR stage musical

A Customer from Gateshead, 5th May, 2006

Hi, Having seen the stage version in london (with Nathan Lane and Lee Evans), I have to say this film is a poor relation. The musical number are there (tho strangly not all of them), but have lost the 'magic' of stage version and just feel flat. The same goes for the performances which again seem to be phoned in(perhaps because both actors have played the characters so many times before). Avoid this film and go and see the stage version instead!

very disappointing

Rehan from , 2nd August, 2006

Ludicrous and deeply unfunny camp send-up of campery: ends up just plain boring, the worst possible outcome. The stage version simply MUST have been better - there's no way this fluff could have been seen as entertaining otherwise. Bob Hope did better in the 60s (and God knows those films were dire beyond belief!).

Rubbish - A very poor parady of the original

A Customer from Romford, Essex, 31st May, 2006

I tried to endure this film but had to switch off after 20 minutes. When I left the room the film was so bad that I could smell it in the hallway, a real stinker. I would rate it 0 stars if this were possible

Just get past the first half an hour

A Customer from Leicester, 24th March, 2007

I agree with most of the poorer reviews, the first half hour i was thinking of turning off. But then it really gets going and had me laughing out loud, frequently, until i cried. Ended up being one of the best films i've seen in ages. A very welcome surprise. Give it a go!

Great Actors but a little boring

A Customer from England, 16th March, 2010

Having watched the original version of this film I was excited to see the new updated version with all my favourite actors. Although the film was funny and the acting was impeccable I found that it tended to drag and that there were so many songs they all began to blur into one. So all in all I would say it was worth a watch but generally when you have something else to do at the same time.

Rather enjoyable

LizB from , 17th January, 2010

I didn't really know what to expect with this film but I enjoyed it far more than I thought I would. The characters were a bit over the top and the music was forgettable however, it had its funny moments and some witty lyrics. Perhaps not the best film I ever seen but enjoyable all the same.

Fantastic!!

John from Sussex, 2nd June, 2009

A fantastic remake that's guaranteed to make you laugh! I immediately bought this after renting it... that's all I can say really... I can't list the good points because there's so many, and I can't list the bad points because there aren't any! An instant classic I could watch over and over and over :-)
