Combining cartoon and live action, this is a ghastly adaptation of the Charles Kingsley classic. Admittedly, director Lionel Jeffries had to revert to animation to tell the tale of a young chimney sweep who rescues a group of underwater children from a tyrannical shark. But the cartooning is bland, the voicing of the sea creatures and the water babies too cute, and the songs are a disgrace. Compounding the disappointment is the fact that the opening section, in which shifty sweep James Mason and his dim-witted assistant Bernard Cribbins plot to burgle a country manor, shows promise.

this film has got to be without a doubt the best childrens film, no matter how old you are or how many times you have watched the film, you will still enjoy it. you would be mad to disagree.

Disappointing

A Customer from Haverhill, 4th November, 2008

I watched this film as a child and i liked it back then. But when i watched now (all grown up) i was quite disappointed! The boys voice in it was strange, it didn't seem like it was his!

Dire Dire Dire

A Customer from Ipswich, 17th September, 2008

For some reason this tripe is enjoyed by my other half due to some throwback to her childhood. It's absolute tosh! Couldn't work out how a London based chimney sweep suddenly found himself in Yorkshire, and surprised to be on the moors. Daft.

An ideal childrens film which makes full use of several effects. Well worth the viewing.

Children Will Love It

YosamiteSam from Kent, 6th March, 2006

Put this in front of any child and they'll love it.

A classic mix of real life and cartoon action under water. The Water babies is a classic from my childhood and I'm sure it will be loved by many more generations.

A little boy who is able to demonstrate that under his dirty, soot stained clothes, lies a heart of gold.

Classic Family Film A*
