Director George Romero turns the vampire genre on its head in this creepy, original 1978 effort. I'll bite ya!

'Martin' is one of George Romero's non-zombie related movies. It seems his reputation as a great director irrespective of his Dead films is often lost, but 'Martin' should further convince you that the man has a knack for superb, atmospheric films. I must say though that 'Martin' is an acquired taste, since most of the film is quite loose with its story and more or less leaves you to figure out whether Martin really is a vampire or just a warped human being who believes he is. There isn't a whole lot of gore here but the atmosphere is quite intense and dark. This certainly isn't a happy film, and like Romero's best work, you're left with a feeling of utter dread when the credits roll. At least this is a respectable vampire movie which doesn't follow tried and tested rules.

Romero on top of his game

Leni from , 14th November, 2009

This is a very surprising film for Romero. Admittedly the central character, and his Central European uncle, believe he is one of the undead. On the other hand, everything that happens could as well happen to anybody who liked to drug people and drink their blood. There is no superhuman strength, nor to the central character's frequently expressed regret, any evidence of a Svengali-like influence over women. As I watched, I found myself beginning to feel some sympathy for him, not least because most of the other characters were very unappealing. But a very good film in a genre that doesn't have many good films to its credit.

Overrated!!

I really wanted to love this film! The idea is bloody awesome. Sadly the Execution is rather lacklustre. Infact, if you're even slightly interested in this film, then i suggest you see 'the Hamiltons'. Instead. It's alot better and less pretentious. We're not talking 'Exorcist or Omen' here. Just do yourself a favour and give it a miss!
