St. Eligius Hospital in South Boston was not exactly the world's best health care centre. Despite its flaws, it featured some of the most caring doctors and nurses you could ever meet. Led by Dr. Donald Westphall (and later by Dr. Benjamin Gideon), St. Eligius became a sanctuary for the underdog and the downtrodden.

Retro and great

Valleyboy31 from from Pontypridd, 21st August, 2008

I watched this programme back in the early eighties and loved it. I was only a teenager but the stories were so compelling it really impressed me. You cannot ignore the fact that this is an eighties series and some of the cultural references are dated but this was the breeding ground for, Denzel Washington, Ed Begley Jr, David Morse and featured some big hitters like William Daniels (if you recognise the voice he was KITT's voice in Knight Rider), so it must have done something right. The series only improves but as you can see from this first disc it seemed to have a defined integrity and class from episode 1. A remarkable series especially when you think that it is over 20 years old, I would highly recommend it...

A TV classic

strange6 from , 6th May, 2007

Probably the best medical drama of all time, this masterpiece of television is entertainment at its very best. The story is simple: a tale of a struggling inner city American hospital and the lives of its many colourful and diverse medics. It ran for many years on TV and I can always remember the controversial conclusion that brought it to an end (probably the wierdest and most original ending to any series on TV or film). If you like your medical dramas, this is essential viewing.

Customer Review

A Customer from UK, 23rd June, 2008

This was one the best two shows from America in the 80s. So when the dvd was on the rental list I got the first three disc sent right away. Unfortunatly the sound and picture was not in cync the talking would be over but the lips kept moving. This was true of all three discs I did'nt bother with the final two discs.

Times have changed...

A Customer from W.Midlands, 24th January, 2009

I loved this in the 80's but I watched the first episode again recently and was quite surprised to find how dated it now seems both in terms of production values and a rather pedestrian script. One thing that was interesting though was how one of the episodes treated the subject of venereal disease in quite a light, almost jokey way. How times change!

the next generation medical drama!

A Customer from newcastle-under-lyme, 7th July, 2008

after the wishy washy stuff of the 60s- dr kildare et al - this was the 1st of a new generation of med. dramas leading the way for the likes of ER etc. it took some brave stances on topical matters of the day, it was consistently well written and the actors made you care what happened to them. many a star has risen form this series - Denzil Washington amongst them. absolutely brilliant and still is! and it has not dated in terms of acting & writing quality. excellent!
