Poetic

John C from uk, 21st November, 2006

I was expecting a grudge/ring type film but its not, and its better for it. Dissapointed to see negative reviews for this. Its about Japenese culture (and wider but thats my interpretation), especially the technological aspects isolating people - friends on the internet are not real friends - and lonliness creeps up to wipe out humans. I didn't fully get the ghost realm linkage bit here, except to say that humans often live their lives as ghosts, and yes the film can be a little confusing - BUT, this stays with you and offers far more than Grudge ever could. An intelligent, poetic film.

Unfortunately my pulse rarely raced

Tracy from Derbyshire, 30th March, 2006

Hi all, I get annoyed when reviews give the plot away so here is my take without doing that, if you are expecting another Ringu or Grudge you will be dissapointed, it lacks their general atmosphere of impending doom and skulking creepiness. The movie is disjointed in places and is one that you cannot miss a second without losing the plot, also the film I feel is 40 mins to long, on the plus side it has its moments [one in particular that was designed for shock but came out in black humour] but unfortunately not enough to make it work for me. It is more an insight into Japanese loneliness and detached internet lives than horror. Worth renting as a new release, but could have been much better.

Unexpected

PLM from London, England, 11th November, 2006

'Pulse' is not a conventional horror movie, even if ghostly figures emerge from the dark from time to time. Vey much like Romero's 'Dawn of the Dead', albeit in a typically Japanese fashion, this movie paints a dark and chilling (this is the real horror factor in 'Pulse) picture of our society, focusing here on loneliness and incommunicability. Not for 'Ring' fans but unexpectedly rewarding and haunting.

a very intelligent and thoughtful film

washingtonirving from from Leamington Spa, 4th October, 2008

negative reviews seem to centre around the notion that this movie was not as scary as expected. that is an unfortunate view to hold. it is, primarily, a work of art on the subject of loneliness, and should be viewed as such, not ranked against slashers and gore-ridden rollercoasters. the cinematography is beautiful, the characters carefully portrayed. there are few jumpy moments, for which we ought to be grateful, because there is hardly a shortage of terror-ride movies, and they don't tend to differ a lot in content. this is a horror movie bold enough to break almost entirely from the horror genre by focusing intently on an artistic vision and allowing any scares to occur almost incidentally in the periphery. brilliant, but don't watch it if you don't have any taste or patience.

Japanese horror film that - thanks to (Kiyoshi) Kurosawa's skilfully, subtly created atmosphere - breaks the mold, sidesteps jump-scares and takes it's central concept to it's surprising but ultimately logical conclusion.

Disappointing

Sammy1973 from , 26th August, 2009

Considering this is an asian film I was expecting class but it did not deliver. I have seen the english or american version of this film and it is much much better which is pretty much unheard of - Asian films are usually so much better. I personally would not recommend this film it is very slow and boring. It lacks the normal suspense and intrigue of Asian films.
