Hayao Miyazaki had been cradling the idea for this wonderful fantasy for a long time before he finally decided to write and direct it. Set in rural Japan during the 1950s, My Neighbour Totoro is full of the magical touches that Miyazaki has become famous for.

Tatsuo Kusakabe and his two daughters, Mei and Satsuki, have moved to the country to be near their ailing mother who resides at a local hospital. As the girls explore their surroundings, the younger sibling, Mei, believes that the forest is inhabited by magical creatures, much to the amusement of her father and sister. However, one day Mei gets lost in the forest and discovers a group of Totoros - protectors of the forest. Eventually Mei convinces Satsuki to come with her and the three have a series of wonderful adventures together, as their mother begins to recuperate.

Family movie

A contender for the ultimate child friendly family movie?

Yup!

If you don't have any children, I suggest you rent some so you'll have an excuse to watch this movie!! My wife and I don't have any kids, but that didn't stop us from spending an enchanting evening in with the DVD.

If you liked Spirited Away, you'll love this!

There's a reason why the average rating for this movie is 6/7 (at the time of writing) - It's a delightful tale with fantastic visuals!

Another amazing Hayao Miyazaki anime movie. You really can't help but love this film. You may think it's aimed at children, but it is certainly enjoyed by millions of people of all ages, due to the fact it's a wonderful story with a feel-good atmosphere. Everything about this movie is great. The animation and characters are just brilliant - one of the nicest movies you can watch.

Classic anime

A wonderful heart warming story. That brings out the child in you. I own this myself on DVD, so my children too can enjoy it. If you can watch the others by Hayao Miyazaki, studio ghibli. The lastest addition Spirited away, which is highly recommened.

Sweet but not sickly!

This is the first Ghibli to make me put my hand in my pocket and buy merchandise. My daughter was very young when i started to collect Ghibli films and i feared Spirited away might give her nightmares. This film is very family friendly you don't need to understand it to enjoy it quirky, unusual but definatly lovable!.

Truly Magnificent

LittleBread from , 19th January, 2010

It's hard to describe the experience of watching My Neighbour Totoro. While there's no real plot to speak of, the film is made up of a string of enchanted and beautiful moments. Miyazaki has a knack for both entertaining children, and recapturing the magic of youth for adults. If you've yet to see a Studio Ghibli film, I would advise against choosing this as your first. While it's definitely one of my favourites from the animation team, it may leave less seasoned viewers wanting in terms of story. However, if you're a fan of anime and especially of Hayao Miyazaki's work, and you haven't seen Totoro yet, this HAS to be on top of your to-see list!
