An antidote to the sunny period pieces adopted from Jane Austen, which feature impeccably coiffed aristocracy engage in the witty banter of drawing room dramas and culminate in a most delightful denouement, 'The Libertine' highlights the underbelly of the Britocracy of centuries past. Adapted from the play by Stephen Jeffreys, the plot follows the dastardly debauchery of the Earl of Rochester (a mischievous Johnny Depp). A hedonist who makes Oscar Wilde seem moralistic, the Earl spent his days and nights in beds, brothels, and bars, awakening from drunken blackouts only to stumble to the nearest whorehouse. Yet this ravishing rake was also possessed of a predilection for poetry, and turned his escapades into acid-tongued witticisms that pepper this frisky film. Directed by first-timer Laurence Dunmore, the historical film picks up in 1678, when the Earl returns to London at the behest of King Charles II (magnetically played by John Malkovich, who starred in the play when it was staged at Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre). With his young wife in tow, our rake immediately immerses himself into a litany of transgressions. When he meets a prostitute and burgeoning actress named Elizabeth Barry (Samantha Morton), he obsessively takes her under his wing, crafting her into an acclaimed stage starlet and eventually bedding her. What follows is a spiral upward, downward, and sideways through the city's pleasure palaces, culminating in a quasi-tragic, quasi-relieving denouement. Melding the naughty energy of his 'Pirates Of The Caribbean' character with the brooding darkness of his wearied detective in 'From Hell', Depp gives a pitch-perfect performance that carries the film, eliciting strange sympathy for such a despicable devil. The score, by the award-winning composer Michael Nyman, adds even further moodiness and dramatic edge to the story.

Raw and Untempered

Rip from Manchester, 29th July, 2006

Quite a strong portrayal of an individual's refusal to be tied to responsibility and constructive contribution. The main character,The Earl of Rochester, manages by chance to have some small positive influence on others, in spite of himself. This film is a fascinating and blunt portrayal which explores the part of human beings that many try desperately to avoid or challenge. The main character played by Johnny Depp, would have been furious at the thought of having to be forced to watch trailers for other movies on this DVD.

Excellent

This is typical Johnny Depp - choosing a character that you are more likely to find repulsive than anything else...and yet again he portrays an englishman with an impeccable accent. This time he is joined by an almost unrecognisable John Malkovich (his accent is so good that he loses his usually immediately recognisable drone) and an ever dependable Samantha Morton. And the film? Well, its an interesting tale of debauchery and excess...enough to keep you interested in its outcome, but never really breaking new grounds. I enjoyed the film in all of its shocking glory (if you are easily shocked by swearing, especially the C word, then you may want to avoid this film) and I thought the art direction was excellent. One last thing though, do not choose this film to highlight the quality of your new dvd player/tv...it is almost entirely in sepia with an added 'grainy' effect and high contrast, to give a kind of vintage realism in a 'candlelit' manner. When I finally realised that it wasn't my TV playing up, I got used to it quite quickly and found it to be extremely beneficial to the atmosphere. Great film, great actors, great acting, ok storyline, worthwhile watch.

Still not sure..

I'm inclined to agree with the 'bad movie, good acting' verdict, but didn't think it was quite that clear cut. Depp and Malkovitch are excellent and do carry the film, but Samantha Morton is not very good as the actress love interest and the elements of the plot involving her aren't terribly clear. Rosamund Pike convinces as Lady Rochester the wife and Francesca Annis is chilling as the dowager Lady Rochester. I wasn't expecting to laugh at this film, but the script in places is very funny. You do get the impression that they're fighting not to play up the attractive elements of Rochester at the expense of the truth, but that not wanting to make him totally unsympathetic they skim over the unpleasantnesses and the result is a curiously flat characterisation. Overall, I'd have to say that this film is also a mixture of good and bad, most of the actors are superb, much of the dialogue is excellent, the plot lets it down - its 'scenes from a life' rather than a narrative whole.

Blew Me Away

This movie is something I am going to be proud to own when it comes out on DVD. As a collector of Johnny Depp movies I can honestly say this is one of his most outstanding performances to date. Although ths film had it's slow parts, the pacier bits made up for it in my opinion. If you want to see Johnny Depp as you've never seen him before you must see this film. If there's one reason to watch this it's for the opening monologue by Johnny. It's witty, it's dirty, it's just down right great!!

The Libertine, What Can I Say???

A Customer from Braintree, 6th November, 2009

WOW! Would be the first word to describe this film. We thought it was a fantastic film with brilliant acting from all the cast, especially Johnny Depp and John Malkovich, not forgetting of course, Johnny Vegas. It was also beautifully filmed giving a really feel for the period and how dirty and depraved it was in all walks of life. Fantastic film we would definatly recommend it.
