Sydney Wells (Jessica Alba) is an accomplished, independent, Los-Angeles based concert violinist. She is also blind, and has been so since childhood. As our story opens Sydney undergoes a double corneal transplant and her sight is restored.

But Sydney's happiness is short lived as unexplained shadowy and frightening images start to haunt her. Are they a passing aftermath of her surgery, Sydney's mind adjusting to sight, a product of her imagination - or something horrifyingly real? As Sydney's family and friends begin to doubt her sanity, Sydney is soon convinced that her annonymous eye donor has somehow opened the door to a terryfying world that only she can now see.

Not Japanese

A Customer from uk, 15th October, 2007

The original was South Korean. The remake is directed by the Japanese director of Ring, and stars Zellweger?? it even copies the original poster. US horror is in a very bad place...

Stick with the original

The Eye is everything you expect from a Hollywood remake of an Asian horror movie. It stars the obligatory ex-teen-tv star (this time Jessica Alba - Gellar must have been on holiday when they called), has a script which borrows elements from the original which the brainless masses will be able to follow, but ditches anything too 'eastern'. It then scraps every bit of tension which worked so well in the original, and glosses the film with a CGI spook shine, a lot of loud noises to prompt you to jump, and a ham-fisted explanation of what is really going on towards the end. Everything which the Pang brothers made so good in the Korean original is lost in a mess of generic Hollywood horror. Alba walks through the part almost on a autopilot, not bothering to really put anything into it (well, to be fair I don't think I'd bother either with this script). There are scares to be had, but only if the sound of loud noises is truely terrifying to you. This is what bewilders me - the original versions of these films has sparse music, and the scares come from the slow psychological build, playing with your mind and unnerving you. Surely when they buy the rights to the film the makers of the Hollywood version can see this? Why, then, do they insist on stripping it bare and making it just another bland horror? If you have seen the original - don't waste your time. If you haven't, but you have seen one of the many other bad horrors from the US in recent years - don't bother. If you have been living under a rock for the past 10 years, or are braindead, then give it a shot. You might like it - but then again, some people like the Scary Movie franchise, so it takes all sorts! As a side note, it is curious that the first reviews posted here were from before the film was released. Good to see some people are jumping the gun to enter the prize draw.
