Liev Schreiber (EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED) plays Robert Thorn--a wealthy American official living in Rome--whose wife Kate (Julia Stiles, MONA LISA SMILE) has just lost her first child. At the behest of a strange priest, Robert substitutes an orphaned child for his own without Kate's knowledge, and soon the small family is living an idyllic existence on a lavish estate in England. But when the child Damian (Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick) turns five years old, strange things begin to happen, beginning with a nanny's public and very grisly suicide at the boy's lavish birthday party. Kate begins to notice odd things about her child, such as the way other children don't want to play with him, his strange provocation of animals, and his increasingly pronounced withdrawal from her. By the time she begins fearing for her life, however, it may be too late, and it's up to her husband to figure out once and for all if the child really is the spawn of Satan. Thus Robert embarks on a journey that takes him back to Italy, Jerusalem, and an encounter with a priest of decidedly horrific demeanour; he's aided by a photographer who has figured out what's going on, and who just might be the next one to die.

John Moore's remake of Richard Donner's unsettling 1976 horror classic increases the quality of production values, yet stays very true to the original. The atmospheric, spooky mise-en-scene, marked by an almost constant storm and grey tones interrupted by startling reds, deliciously makes the most of the film's exaggeratedly apocalyptic message. The wonderful Mia Farrow (ROSEMARY’S BABY) is suitably creepy as Damian's replacement nanny.

No atheists in foxholes.

For those who never saw the original, this is a good movie. It's intense, nicely photographed with excellent surround sound, and capably acted. For those of us who watched the original in 1976, the one that starred Gregory Peck and Lee Remick, we have to ask, 'What is the point of watching this?' For us - at least most of us - the original is superior, but not by a wide margin, to be fair. I have no problem with remakes if they are not cheaply presented and I was entertained by this presentation even though I knew the story. It was interesting to see this with the updated technology both off (digital surround sound, etc.) and on the screen (laptop computers, cell phones, etc.) but the story is still similar enough that owning both of these films is questionable. Given the choice, I would stick with the 1976 film, but - I repeat: if you've never seen 'The Omen,' this movie is recommended. It's entertaining, that's for sure.

Why?

Thetruthisoutthere from from Croydon, 7th June, 2006

Why remake such a fantastic classic into such a dire, laughable film that relies on sudden shock tactics to scare instead of building tension of the oringinal.

How they ever swindled the big name actors into making this rubbish is beyond me. Wooden acting from the two leads.

Avoid this and rent the original and have the wits scared out of you!!!

Why remake a film only 30 years after the original it's not as if the original has dated that badly. The remake is okay, follows the original pretty much to the letter with the deaths brought more up to date (watch the extended versions). This not as good as the original and to be honest the neither does the score or the child actor . I've rated it still quite highly just in case people are against renting 30 year old films as the concept and story is still excellent. BUT please rent the original you'll much prefer it, why not rent both to compare!

Bad omen

Tim from London, England, 8th June, 2006

We went for a West End cinema on 6/6/6, the day of release, in the hope of a bit of atmosphere and were mightily disappointed. All the ingredients appear to be there, but somehow it doesn't work, and is just not scary enough. Looks beautiful, plenty of religious imagery and music but the acting is very average, although Liev Schrieber does well enough. There are about three big shocks and two of those are telegraphed in advance - we went into a horror film in the expectation of coming out scared, but we only came out wanting our money back. Not recommended.

OHmen NO!

Why are remakes so terribly bad? I admired the original Omen film, classic horror at its best and very scary. This remake had none of those elements. Great cast with some heavy weight actors and some not so well known's in the lead roles. The acting was ok although the little boy looked more scowling than scary, which ruined the film for me. The effects were pretty good and stayed true to the original film, but did not add anything extra to this remake. So I do not see why they bothered to remake this film there was nothing new to add it wasn't any scarier either! Poor, poor show rent the 1976 version instead!

Pointless re-make

Kaxxx from , 22nd July, 2009

I gotta say 'Nay' on this one guys. I'm a huge horror fan and I loved the original Omen trilogy - thats right, a trilogy. Omen IV doesnt exist I dont give a damn if you've seen it or not. It never happened! This re-telling of the Omen is simply that. Its the original re-told nowadays and shot almost scene for scene. When I say scene for scene I dont mean how they done the remake of Psycho which was literally scene for scene and even shot for shot (what was the point?). I just found myself going along with the film and sayin to myself, 'oh here's where the priest gets impaled', or 'oh, here he goes on his scooter to knock his Ma over the balcony' (switching a tricycle for a scooter, you sly buggers - see? it really is different!). The acting isnt too bad. The actors turn out decent enough performances its just that when you know whats coming up and how the story goes its hard to get truly involved or give a damn about the characters. Why did I watch it then, I hear you ask? Curiosity. Like most fans of the original I wanted to see what they've done with this 'all new version'. Lastly, Damien himself has to get a mention. Played by Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick (hmmm, I wonder where his family hail from), Damien just came across as a little disturbed to me. In the original, Harvey Stephens was pretty believable as the Son of Satan and gave off that unsettling feeling that there was something not quite right about this kid. I havent heard whether this is to be the first remake of a trilogy but here's hoping it aint.

Disappointing

A Customer from Tunbridge Wells, 19th June, 2009

ok so here's where they got it wrong - Soundtrack. Oh my god did they not realise the reason the original was so scary was because of the excellent music (that won an academy award i might add). Acting, acting, acting. Female lead was appalling. Finally, why? You can't do it better than it was done in 1976. The magic was there and the cast were superb actors and actresses. Leave this one well alone.
