Director Guy Ritchie's (LOCK, STOCK AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS) fourth feature film is about a hard-bitten gambler named Jake Green (played by Ritchie favorite Jason Statham). Green has just spent a lengthy stretch in jail and is seeking revenge on the man who put him behind bars--crime overlord Dorothy Macha (Ray Liotta). Macha's thirst for gambling is his weak spot, and Green exploits it by soundly beating him on a visit to the crime boss's own casino. A hit is subsequently ordered on Green, and he teams up with two tough guys. Avi (Andre Benjamin aka Andre 3000 from Atlanta-based hip-hop outfit Outkast) and Zack (Vincent Pastore) who offer to protect him. Green must give all his money to Avi and Zack, and work for them, if he values his life, so he agrees to the deal despite simultaneously discovering that he suffers from a rare blood disease that will kill him within three days.

At this point in the movie Ritchie and writer Luc Besson (who adapted the screenplay from Ritchie's original script) loosen the narrative structure of REVOLVER, deliberately confounding their audience as the film takes a number of oddball twists and turns. The bloodshed and extreme violence of Ritchie's first two films remain, but he takes this movie into unusual territory as Statham's character begins to ponder the meaning of life, scenes are replayed with different consequences, and an assassin (played by Mark Strong) has an existential crisis about his occupation. REVOLVER isn't an easy ride, but it is likely to stir some debate among passionate Ritchie fans as he follows SWEPT AWAY with another unusual addition to his canon.

What on earth..............

JediSi from , 17th August, 2007

As a big Guy Ritchie fan I went to see this at the cinema with several mates when it was released and we all left totally and utterly confused. No-one spoke, no-one knew what to say. We simply just didn't see what the film was about, it was.........nothing. I'm sure there's a plot there somewhere but none of us seemed to be able to find it. In an attempt to try and work it all out I watched it again recently, but alas I still couldn't find anything that made sense and the disc got filed in the round file as I cursed at the loss of another 2 hours wasted. No words can really describe this film. It's a complete waste of time and energy, a total washout. I couldn't find any entertainment value whatsoever and highly disuade anyone from watching this tosh.

Absolutely terrible

MickyC1 from Lancashire, 4th April, 2006

I thoroughly enjoy films in this genre, however this film gave me severe headaches.

Some films need to be watched twice to completely enjoy the full story. I could watch this film more than twenty times & I would still be at a loss.

Sorry Guy but back to the drawing board I think...

A different direction...

A Customer from Westcliff, 27th September, 2005

Do not expect this to be the usual Guy Richie gangster film, this is a more radical crime film than the crowd pleasing previous outings. Although the film starts slowly, and is a touch too long, it is the intrigue which builds throughout which will keep you hooked. The film has nods of respect to films such as The Usual Suspects, Fight Club, Kill Bill and even a slight resemblance to Pulp Fiction (the subtle biblical undertones) but remember, it is not those films. I admit there is influence from them but at least we can be glad it is not another unimaginative American remake! If you can get past the ropey early script and beyond the fact that it is not another rehash of his first two films, you can then sit back and slip slowly further down the rabbit hole. The more I thought about this film afterward the more it began to peel away its layers. It had people thinking and discussing its merits or deciphering its confusion long after the credits rolled. One to watch out for is Andre (from the Rap Group Outkast), he's the one wearing the Yorkshire flat-cap for most of the film. I see this guy becoming a star of the silver screen regular. If you want a gangster crime film to get you thinking then this is worth a look, if you want a fast paced wise cracking london gangster flick then stick to his earlier efforts. C'mon it's not a bad as 'Swept away'...

What was all that about?

Goslin from Hertfordshire, 21st April, 2006

Liking Guy Ritchies' previous films (Snatch, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) I sat down with a few to watch this film in excitement. When the film ended I would of felt like an idiot if it wasn't for my other firends saying things like "is that it?" and "what happend?".

The film tries to be too clever for it's own good. It uses too many diiferent cinematic effects such as different camera techniques and pointless Anime for example. If the plot wasn't difficult enough to follow, these effects make things worse.

The plot is awful with too many twists and turns that I kept getting lost. I have watched it twice now and I need to ask my self why I put myself through it a second time.

Awful Film

A Customer from Liverpool, 21st March, 2010

We just say down to watch this and had to turn it off after half an hour.We just could not understand what was happening but I don't think that was because of its intellectual content. I would not recommend anyone waste a valuable Sunday night on this.

Revolver-Guy Ritchie

lutrasview from , 18th March, 2010

a great film. It's a bit odd at the start as the main character narrates part of the story to himself, as he introduces new characters and explains how they relate to him. The story then picks up pace so you need to concentrate on how the interacting characters become entwined in the story. It wasn't until the end that you start to understand why he narrates part, and then you see the links between the characters and understand how each relates to the others, much like lock, stock. Gets a bit violent near the end as the gangs fight against each other and then there's the final twist. So, rent this, find a quiet evening with the mates and enjoy.

Revolver, just round & round

Not the best Guy Ritchie movie. I think it tried to be too many other movies or Tarantinoesque but it didn't come off. Won't be in a hurry to see this again even when it's on TV

Underrated Guy Richie film

brokenking from , 3rd February, 2010

Given his previous efforts this is a mis step, but not so big as its reputation might lead to you think. Richie carry on his slew of gangerster with one adding in a series of mind games that are being played on the lead, a rather trampy looking Jason Stratham. The co stars are good but a world away from the usual Cockney wide boys we're used to seeing. The look/style of the film does add a feel of articifiality to the whole which only partially helps the film. The main flaw is the plot, not that the story is terrible but more that it ties itself in too many knots. By the end, enjoying the whole serial tactical games the lead was playing with his handlers and expecting the ending to wrap it all up, I was still wondering if I had jump a page or two. There is just a bit too much going on by the end to be fully resolved. I think overall Guy bit off more then he could chew but still managed to pull of something very different from his usual output.
