In this screen adaptation of Jennifer Weiner's bestselling novel, Toni Collette (MURIEL'S WEDDING) is Rose Feller, an overweight, overworked, and painfully undersexed lawyer who fills an emotional void with pints of Haagen-Dazs and a closetful of expensive shoes that she never wears. Little sis Maggie (an always radiant Cameron Diaz), who is prone to public drunkenness, one night stands, and wearing lingerie as outerwear, is as lacking in career prospects as her sister is in romantic ones. When her irresponsible behaviour gets her kicked out of her father's house by her spiteful stepmother, Maggie has nowhere to crash but her elder sister's couch. But, after she ignites a series of disasters ranging from the minor to the catastrophic, Maggie is cast out by her angry older sibling, with no job, no money, and no one to take her in. She finds a stash of hidden letters in her father's desk drawer that enable her to track down her estranged grandmother (the wonderfully centred Shirley MacLaine) in a Florida retirement community, hoping to use her impressive skills of manipulation and false charm to financial benefit. While Maggie begins to adapt to life as a nubile young fish in the waters of shuffleboard and wheelchairs, Rose, up in the wintry north, quits her stifling job and begins her own personal transformation. Both women's paths to spiritual growth and self-actualisation might ring false if handled by less nuanced performers and a flashier director, but here they are subtle enough to be both inspiring and realistic. Director Curtis Hanson has proven to be a flexible artist, jumping from genre to genre with the prowess and confidence of those studio directors of Hollywood's Golden Age. With IN HER SHOES, the man behind L.A. CONFIDENTIAL and 8 MILE elevates the chick flick out of that pigeonhole, crafting a story of surprising depth and universal appeal.

A bit cheesey

Mbub from Westbury, Wilts, 30th April, 2007

This film is about 2 sisters, one loud, one quiet and how they get on. I didn't see this movie, but my wife felt it was an average film for people who like this kind of thing. Don't expect miracles, but 'nice' to watch.

If you have a sibling you know this movie..

I did not think I would enjoy this, I'll be honest, I was not in the mood for a chick flick with my best friend, but it was her turn to choose. What I discovered was a charming film with all the classic make you laugh / make you cry moments so skillfully done that it did not feel like a 'movie by numbers'. You saw genuine growth in the characters and you empathised with them - even Cameron Diaz - who is great at slapstick but not at drama. Try it, there is a slow build up but you'll be surprised at how engrossed you become.

A perfect fit!

Continuing to prove himself as one of the most versatile talents in Hollywood, director Curtis Hanson elevates the genre typically dismissed as the 'chick flick' in this poigant tale of two sisters who have nothing in common but the same shoe size.

If this seemingly banal premise that sees workaholic Rose (Toni Colliette) and party girl Maggie (Cameron Diaz) each embark on a journey on self discovery sets off alarm bells of boredom, they will soon be silenced.

This is a hugely entertaining film, with a great script and an array of winning performances.
Hanson and his cast find real emotional depth in the material that never succumbs to cheap sentiment. The always charming Diaz is endldessly touching, balancing her trademark comedic skills with senstivity, whilst Toni Colette proves she was deprived of an oscar nomination this year and Shirley Maclaine is wonderful as the grandmother who turns both their lives around.

Rent this now - You will not be disappointed, It's a movie of Maznolo Blahnik quality!

Not just a

Why would this chick flick appeal to a guy? A story concerning two sisters, one a sluttish Cameron Diaz and the other a frumpy Toni Collette, fall out over a guy. Directed by Curtis Hanson (L.A. Confidential, 8 Mile) with a script (penned by the writer of Erin Brochovich and 28 Days) that doesn't let the story get swamped by the usual chick flick fare. This way the characters are able to act to the best of their abilities, and not over sweeten the heart felt plot. The film is about sibling rivalry/love and all that comes in-between. There are funny moments and touching moments, and Shirley MacLaine still giving a show stealing performance in her 70's. I was lucky enough to watch this in a mixed group, and although i thought it was excellent, found that opinion unanimous.

Good for a chick flick!!

A Customer from Billingshurst, 7th September, 2009

A rarity for me this one, usually I'm in charge of what we watch in our house but my wife was insistent that we watch this. And how good it was! The story revolves aroundCameron Diaz and Toni Collette playing two sisters who are completly different and have a major falling out but manage to sort things out in the end, it may sound formulaic but the chemistry between the two leads make this very watchable. Worth a look.
