This high-action flight movie centres on a team of three sexy stealth bomber pilots who are forced to fly with EDI (Extreme Deep Invader), a computer-manned prototype plane that specialises in extra-precision bombing. The brainchild of a Bill Gates-esque wunderkind (Richard Roxburgh), EDI has the ability to learn at a fantastic rate, talks like HAL from 2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY, and likes to listen to hard rock before going into combat. Before long, a freak accident causes it to question authority and launch an attack on Russia. W.D. Richter's script probes big issues involving man, machine, and the nuclear fate of the free world (Read: DR. STRANGELOVE meets THE TERMINATOR). But this is also an action thrill ride from Rob Cohen the man responsible for THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS and XXX replete with some truly tremendous explosions and speeds that outdo any mph records set in Cohen's past oeuvre. Jessica Biel (TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE) is tough and surprisingly believable as the token female fighter pilot, while Jamie Foxx (RAY) makes a fine wingman to the daredevil squadron leader played by Josh Lucas. Sam Shephard (THE RIGHT STUFF) is their commanding officer, with Joe Morton playing a shady politician.

Don't Bother Disengaging Your Brain...

David Wilkinson from Durham, England, 5th August, 2005

...you need a lobotomy to watch this. Poor, obvious plot, bad dialogue, wooden acting and terrible direction.....and they're the high points. The action shots are full of cheap camera and CGI tricks with an appalling amount of goofs in every scene. I also lost count of the number of rip-offs this film makes, 'Top Gun' (obviously), 'Flight of the Navigator' (I kept waiting for the EDI to say 'Compliance'), '2001' ('I'm sorry Dave, I can't allow you to do that'), even had the flavour of 'Team America - World Police', but without the humour (Did he say Tajikistan or Durkadurkistan!). I sure you'll come up with your own too. All in all a truly terrible film. Should've gone straight to DVD and into the bargain bin.

HYPERSONIC

Top gun flight team get to fly with a new roboplane. During a mission it gets hit by lightening and goes off program. Lots of fantastic flight sequences and action.

Sub plot involving corrupt Politician and Navy brass. Typical hollywood feelgood ending. Does what it says on the box.

Joe morton plays the aircraft carrier captain. David andrews is the doggy
Politician.

Really bad...

A Customer from gloucester, 2nd October, 2005

This film manages to insult the viewer at every turn (It's cliche token black guy, the cliche tough chick, and the supirior that against all sound judgement proceeds with the mission though he's knows he should'nt). The script is awful, bordering on racist, and sexist and the acting laughable and it even manages to screw up the action scenes. The plot rips off every thing from 2001,top gun and behind enemy lines, which is fine if your going to do it with a toungue in cheek style - which this does not. That is perhaps it's biggest down fall - instead of being a tounge in cheek boys own adventure - it seems the filmakers actually belive in the 'god bless America' sickly sentiment. This film manages every cliche going from old 80's movies but never gets any where near the dizzy heights of the high concept jerry bruckheimer flicks that it wishes to be. Avoid.

Not bad

stmary from Wiltshire, 26th April, 2006

Sit back and enjoy a feast of top gun in the 21st century. Easy plot simple to follow a typical Saturday night movie.

You could find fault with the acting and the storyline is a little on the predictable lines.

Had to laugh at the fact that the story involves an unmanned aircraft that enjoys a little rock music played loud, I am no plane engineer but fitting loudspeakers would not be a priority.

How embarrassing...

A Customer from Wargrave, 12th March, 2010

...OMG, I can't believe this movie was in my Watch List. How, why, what was I thinking??? I would rather brush my teeth with orange juice than recommend this overbudgeted plotless pile of showy tosh!

The plot tries to marry the gung-ho infantilism of 'Top Gun' with a '2001' investigation of the dangers inherent in machines developing autonomous decision-making. Yet the action sequences entertain more than some reviews allow for. let's face it, 'Top Gun' had a dearth of that!!!! Worst bit has to be the carrier-deck homage to the fallen pilot - not that actor's finest moment.
