Could have been better edited, but all in all a good movie... shame it has not yet been released in the UK in any format (screen or DVD) at the time of writing this....

It's amazing. There is some real cack released, but this is quite a good film (written and directed by a Brit) that amazingly still hasn't been released over here. Quite bizarre, really. Especially considering the fact that right now in London, Modigliani is back on the agenda, with a major exhibition of his female portraits. What better timing than now to finally give this film a deserved release? It's certainly not a bad film. Some of it is poorly edited, and the ending is very much 'artistic licence' (although what happens to Jeanne is true, but that does not mean it should not get a proper release in this country. Andy Garcia is (as usual) excellent in the role, as is Omid Djallili as Picasso - some of the best scenes are the confrontations between the two painters. This is one of the better biopics I've seen lately, and I hope it gets a more deserved release. The paintings, all made especially for the film (the ones in the competition towards the end of the film are complete inventions, for example) are excellent. They capture the original artists' styles quite well. All in all, quite a successful movie.

unconvincing...

..just what you'd expect hollywood to do with european art... lots of laboured, barely credible and slick, cliched short vignettes - sadly doesnt make for compulsive viewing

For anyone interested in serious film this is not for you. I had looked forward to an incisive look into the reall creative processes of someone whose work I know something of. But as ever I find a filmic concentration on hysterics, drunkenness, violence, artists in a frenzy lsashing paint back and forth in a froth. Interesting casting. Jeanne particularly well cast. Djalali as Picasso was a querky and I think, successful choice given the overall scale of aspiration of this production. Lighting and scene setting was good. Costume was convincing. Music good and acting relatively seamless. The problem is with the writing and imagining a film that is not only a vehicle for an excessive lifestyle but also for the solitary and intense activity of painting/sculpting. The film is shallow but mildly entertaining.

Crazy but Heart Warming

Drunken artist who has just a little quirky artistic style goes head to head with Picasso. Falls for woman with beautiful eyes but refusing to paint her eyes until he knows her soul. Story of struggle with poverty, need to be recognised as an artist and, of course, love.

The windows

A Customer from Cornwall, 28th July, 2008

Fantastic biopic about the man who, in my opinion invented it. My mum cried all the way through - she once lived in a house with exactly the same type of windows and damaged her back cleaning them regularly. This was years before double glazing and proprietry cleaning materials. Well worth a gander if only to see Picasso playing himself!
