Robert Rodriguez (SPY KIDS, DESPERADO) directed this hyperkinetic kids' film based on a script by his pre-teen son, Racer. The plot concerns a daydreaming youngster named Max (Cayden Boyd) whose fantasy stories about the titular superheroes the molten-hot Lava Girl (Taylor Dooley), and a boy raised by sharks appropriately named Shark Boy (Taylor Lautner) inspire the ridicule of everyone from the local bullies to his own mom (Kristin Davis). Even Max's fourth grade teacher (George Lopez) wants him to come down to earth, but then a tornado brings Shark Boy and Lava Girl into the school to whisk Max off to the planet Drool, where only his dreaming skills can save the day.

Surprising good

I like superhero movies and this intrigued me, so when I came to watch it I wondered what would happen.

Its clear that the original idea came from a kid, but the story is fantastic. I can see a successful writing/ scripting future ahead.

It would be nice to see a sequel to see what happens to Lavagirl and Sharkboy. The two titled characters are both named Taylor in real life I bet that was confusing!

Better than average for 7-year-olds

A Customer from Oxford, 21st April, 2006

My boys liked this film - with its special effects and 'fairly' engaging storyline. Wouldn't describe it as family viewing - didn't do much for me, but was better than average and did hold their interest for several sittings. (We tend to watch our DVDs more than once.)However, viewers should be aware that there is a 3-D version on the DVD if you've got the 3-D glasses. (There's nothing about this on the rental information.) We sat through it with some very weird colours, etc. before realising that there was a 2-D option on the menu!

Second Rate Spy Kids

Hmmm, there isn't much to say about this film, its a second rate Spy Kids. Just not very good, not even pleasing to watch. I'll tell you something though, this film will easily banish any of the crushes on Twilight and New Moon's Jacob.
