When their beloved foster mother is killed in a holdup, four tough brothers reunite in their old Detroit neighbourhood with revenge on their minds. Mark Wahlberg plays the brawl-hungry leader, Bobby. His brother, Angel (Tyrese Gibson), is a rowdy sailor with a high-strung Latina girlfriend (Sofi Vergara). Garrett Hedlun plays the young rock and roller of the clan. And Outkast's Andre 3000, Benjamin, is the family man whose tenuous mob connection may link him to the killers. Director John Singleton ably blends his action skills (SHAFT, 2 FAST 2 FURIOUS) and his gift for capturing the warm heart at the centre of violent urban masculinity (BABY BOY, BOYZ N THE HOOD) to create a cooked-to-perfection gangster stew. A soundtrack jammed with 1970s Motown classics roots everything firmly in the gritty tradition of the best of that decade's blaxploitation and urban revenge thrillers. Action highlights include a skidding car chase through snowy streets, some rough street hockey, and a bullet-intensive neighbourhood shoot-out. With its talented, likeable cast, clever plotting, and sharp dialogue, this is a real crowd-pleaser that nonetheless doesn't shy away from depictions of street violence. There's not an ounce of fat on it no extraneous romance, and no going straight at the end. Terrence Howard (HUSTLE & FLOW) is the well-meaning but ineffectual detective who tries to put a lid on the boys' rebelliousness. The spirits of Dirty Harry and Charles Bronson should be proud, and action fans will be well pleased.

Good film!!

SHEZA9999 from Greater Manchester, 2nd November, 2005

Good film but by no means a classic. I thought that there was good chemitry between the actors and the story line was ok and easy to follow. Definitely worth watching.

AWFUL!!!

Helix242 from , 17th April, 2006

This was an amazing film, that not only brandished a formulaic Hollywood screenplay, but also the directing speed of a slug with a cold! There characters were... Well there was no characterization. This is a film that should be seen by 17 year boys, eating pizza, and wondering if the homo-erotic violence is exciting!!! Definately not one to watch.

Edgy

Kokan from London, UK, 11th September, 2005

Four brothers has a very hard-to-swallow plot, which is where it loses half a star. It is also a bit too much in favour of action, instead of drama, where it loses another half a star. The rest is great. Four main characters are believable - both individually and together. The film holds your attention from beginning to end and makes no apologies for the continuous and (mostly) excessive violence. There is no requirement to neatly slot everyone into good guys and bad guys and the story is anything but a fairy tale.

KICK ASS REVENGE!!!

Phil from Surrey, 14th October, 2005

A really great revenge film. The suspense and drama ARE delivered well. The film keeps building you up and up with more tension and more action! There are some great scenes, good plot twists, but its the action that will blow you away. The violence is quite shocking as not much is left to the imagination, which I thought added to an excellent mood for the film. I loved the characters, Wahlberg does a great job of leading the cast here but I think its a very cool Tyrese Gibson who steals the show. The only question is ... how long did Wahlburg spend walking up that river in the snow?!?

Alright, nothing special

A Customer from London, 19th February, 2010

A film to zone out to, with a follow-able enough plot. The acting is cringey in parts, but a good mature performance from Andre Benjamin among largely immature characters. Has funny moments. Alright but nothing great.

Mumbling nonsense

balby from , 24th January, 2010

This film is awful. Apart from the bizarre script and wooden acting you can barely discern the dialogue because all the cast mumble their lines. Looked very promising in the trailers and as a theme for a film but was simply awful. Avoid.
