Paul Newman was nominated for an Oscar and George Kennedy received one for his work in this allegorical prison drama. Luke Jackson (Paul Newman) is sentenced to a stretch on a southern chain gang after he's arrested for drunkenly decapitating parking meters. While the avowed ambition of the captain (Strother Martin) is for each prisoner to get their mind right, it soon becomes obvious that Luke is not about to kowtow to anybody. When challenged to a fistfight by fellow inmate Dragline (George Kennedy), Luke simply refuses to give up, even though he's brutally beaten. Luke knows how to win at poker, even with bad cards, by using his smarts and playing it cool. Luke also figures out a way for the men to get their work done in half the usual time, giving them the afternoon off. Finally, when Luke finds out his mother has died, he plots his escape; when he's caught, he simply escapes again. Soon, Luke becomes a symbol of hope and resilience to the other men in the prison camp -- and a symbol of rebelliousness that must be stamped out to the guards and the captain. Along with stellar performances by Newman, Kennedy, and Martin, Cool Hand Luke features a superb supporting cast, including Ralph Waite, Harry Dean Stanton, Dennis Hopper, Wayne Rogers, and Joe Don Baker as members of the chain gang.~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Radio Times

Chiming perfectly with the “Summer of Love” in which it was released, this subtle blend of acknowledging the needs of the individual and respecting a freedom of spirit was one of the key American films of the 1960s. It's basically an old-fashioned chain-gang movie — not much had changed at Warner Bros since the days of Paul Muni's I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang — except that this time the tale is told in stunning Technicolor. Paul Newman is superb in the Muni role, and both the prologue and the egg-eating scene have become screen classics. The religious symbolism does get a little tiresome, but the movie is clearly the career high point of director Stuart Rosenberg and a real credit to Jack Lemmon's production company. The film was also influential in the massive popularity of Raybans!

Halliwell's Film Guide

Allegedly a Christ-allegory, this well-made and good-looking film is only partially successful as an entertainment; slow stretches of soul-searching alternate with brutality, and not much acting is possible.

A True Classic

Sir John Read from Ascot, 4th June, 2008

This film successfully transports the viewer into the troubled world of Luke, a popular (but not necessarily seeking popularity) man. He at some point hits the self-destruct button but I loved him and was totally absorbed in his struggle against both the system and life generally. A great film which is a triumph of substance over action.

All time classic

All time classic 'Prisoner' Movie. Some scenes are infamous in film history and have been copied, in some form or another many times over.
Classic scenes from this film are reqularly quoted in TV's obsession with 'TOP 10' lists.
These include:
The carwash scene,
Boiled eggs
and the prison visit.

Good

Paul Newman is brilliant in this, a real cool character. Maintains a good flow throughout and doesn't get boring or 'drag' along. Worth watching even if just for Newman's performance.

Not the best Paul Newman film

A Customer from London, 13th August, 2009

Aside from the egg eating competition I couldn't get very excited about this film. I wanted to like the Paul Newman character but didn't. This probably shows that he acted it well as the character came across as a bit of a brute but consequently there was no hero to support. It's possible that i should watch it again in case I've missed some understated cinematography or lines from the script.

A Newman Classic

Among one of my favourites of all time, this ranks alongside 'The Hustler' as one of Paul Newman's best films. They just don't make them like this any more.
