Halliwell's Film Guide

Old-fashioned mystery thriller, as though Holmes and Watson were combating a modern Moriarty (and a rough-hewn production). The whole thing is camped up like an end-of-term treat, and as a further gimmick four guest stars allegedly appear under heavy disg

Who dunnit

A Customer from Peterhead, 23rd July, 2008

Classic style and it works. Always greed that moves the spirit to evil and this is done again and again. Well balanced with the right tempo and the climax a fresh look at justice being meted out to the villain.

One for a wet afternoon!

A Customer from Torquay, 18th August, 2008

This was very dated and not subtle by modern standards. I think a lot of cash must have been spent in paying top notch actors to play bit parts in it. Its not a film Id ever buy: wont watch it again but I can see it helping to pass a wet afternoon!

OH NO, ITS BLACK AND WHITE

ItsMe from , 3rd September, 2009

I thought I remembered this being in colour in my youth, but apparently my mind was playing tricks as its definitely B/W. Its hopefuylly old fashioned now, but its a good enough tale and its clever twist at the end when all the actors take off their disguises ends the film off really rather well.

Highly Enjoyable Romp

A Customer from Harrogate, 26th November, 2008

There's nothing all that original or even unfamiliar about this movie but it's such darned good fun that it comes up freshly minted on every viewing. Ignore the feeble gimmick of the guest stars - some of whom never did the dressing up anyway - and concentrate instead on the clever plot, the witty dialogue and some smashing performances from George C. Scott and old timers like Gladys Cooper and Clive Brook.
