American Tail, An - The Treasure Of Manhattan Island

That adorable little imp Fievel Mousekewitz is back (An American Tail, An American Tail: Fievel Goes West). Plucky and determined, Fievel sets out on a quest for buried treasure, located under old New York City, where he and his family happily reside (although his sometimes-cranky father is a workaholic). Underground, Fievel meets a clandestine civilization of Native American mice, with a sweet little gal reminiscent of Pocahontas to provide a little romance to boot.

For all their noble intentions, the first two Fievel movies had a tendency to lay on their message of racial harmony with a trowel. In an increasingly multicultural world, such lessons in tolerance are invaluable, but the solemn sense of decent citizenship borders on the sanctimonious in this direct-to-video offering. Tiny tots will enjoy the story, which sees the immigrant mouse join forces with a band of indigenous rodents to protect a stash of treasure from some avaricious industrialists. But while older kids might rally to the darker, scarier moments, they'll probably squirm along with the grown-ups to the excruciating songs.
