Leslie Howard plays a perfect gentleman--a lonely intellectual in search of meaning. When he lands in a deserted café, he finds what he's looking for in the form of young Bette Davis, whose character yearns for the artistic climate of gay Paris. The small group of hostages take turns telling their tales, fearing death, while Bogie plots to reunite with his gang and his girl.

The acting could have been slightly better, but still much better that any Kevin Costner film....an unprovoked attack...don't know what came over me there...sorry about that.

Howard vs. Bogart

Stephen Smith from England, 21st November, 2006

The Petrified Forest sees two huge screen presences face off, with Leslie Howard's effete wanderer held hostage by Humphrey Bogart's brutal gangster. This was Bogart's breakout role, and it's clear to see why, he gives a very haunting performance, which is evenly matched by Howard's turn as an intellectual failure who has finally found his purpose in life. The legnedary Bette Davis also features, although she is quite unremarkable. The supporting cast is good, with Charley Grapewin getting most of the good lines. Some of the dialogue is a little daft, but that detracts very little from an otherwise gripping film.
