Joon (Mary Stuart Masterson), a mentally disturbed young woman, lives with her older (and over-protective) brother, Benny (Aidan Quinn). He puts up with the untenable situation because of his love for her and his dislike of institutions. Just when their relationship reaches a point where things have to change, the soft-spoken, silent film-obsessed Sam (Johnny Depp) enters their lives and slowly begins a romance with the fragile Joon. His love proves to be just the therapy she needs--and it finally gives the reclusive Benny, who hasn't even been able to commit to a second date, the chance to start a romance of his own.

Radio Times

You'll either find this so-so romantic fable a whimsical joy or annoyingly eccentric, as beguiling man-child Johnny Depp woos mentally unstable Mary Stuart Masterson, much to her brother Aidan Quinn's concern. It's one of those “lunatics are saner than the rest of us” polemics, admittedly heartfelt but, ultimately, too underwritten to put its message across properly. However, the performances do wonders in papering over the credibility gaps, and Depp's silent movie skills, much in evidence because his character is besotted with Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, are truly remarkable.

Depp shows his talents yet again

Debbie from Scotland, 25th February, 2005

Although it's not the most exciting movie Johnny Depp has starred in, this lovely movie still provides a lot of entertainment (especially from Johnny.) He plays Sam, a strange and quirky young man who falls in love with Joon, a mentally ill woman. She lives with her brother who has been her carer since being a child. The movie shows the compliacated relationships between the three of them. Johnny Depp made me laugh so much with his Keaton/Chaplin antics.

Wonderful

A Hobbit from The Shire, 18th August, 2004

This is a wonderful little film. The story is very sweet and yet thought provoking. Johnny Depp is the real star of this film. He is sweet and funny, portraying mental illness in a new light. Joon's fear and lack of knowledge about the world is sweet and wonderfully done. This is all round a wonderful film that will make you both laugh and cry. Watch it or the raisin will get you!

I loved this film

A Customer from Reading, 27th April, 2004

This is a charming film. It may have a rose tinted view of mental illness, but the three protagonists make a good job of the emotional triangle. Quirky, offbeat escapism

Lovely Film

Sandy from Shropshire from England, 22nd August, 2005

One for the ladies - Get the Sunday Lunch out of the way, send the men to the pub and put your feet up with a box of chocs and a box of tissues. Sad and funny at the same time. Sam (Johnny Depp) very touching in the way he deals with Joon's (Mary Mastriani) mental illness. Brilliant comedy routine in the park by Depp. A young Johnny Depp but still gorgeous. Highly recommended gentle film with good music soundtrack.

Adds up to less than the sum of its parts

A Customer from Lancashire, 29th January, 2010

I like Johnny Depp, I like Mary Stuart Masterton, it's a nice idea and the music is, at times, absolutely brilliant (I hunted down the soundtrack online the other day), plus, although I'm a bloke I can be a sucker for this kind of chick flick, yet I was left vaguely disappointed. My gf showed me the park scene years ago - a standout display of 'silent' era slapstick skill by Johnny Depp, with perfect musical accompaniment - but I never bothered to watch the whole movie, so for years my only impression of the movie was vaguely favourable, based on that one scene. Having mellowed with age, I decided to watch the film in its entirety and although it's worth a look if you like this kind of thing, it didn't quite gel for me. The character of Sam, although likeable, is just too kooky. That he likes silent movies isn't enough to explain it - how is he so skilled in slapstick? Where did he get the period clothes? He is essentially a child so why has he been allowed to leave home? The film also sugar coats mental illness but it's a feelgood movie, not a gritty documentary, so that can be forgiven. It's a nice idea but just a bit too whimsical and unreal - a bit more backstory for Sam would have alleviated the sense that the producers crowbarred these kooky traits in purely to make the character endearing. (Just gotta say this! I can't believe the reviewer who said the music is really, really, really bad! The music is the best thing about the film. I've got 30-40 CDs of movie scores/ soundtracks by many composers and this is among my favourites. Still, each to their own...)

A strange guy mets a strange girl and falls in love. If you are a romantic you must see this movie. A all time great from Johnny Depp, if you love Depp this is a must see!! Some very classic sences in this movie. See Johnny like you have never seen him before. A good plot to go with it, still a bit of a chick flick but still very touching and funny. A must see!!!!!!
