Radio Times

In this wonderfully beguiling and bizarre study of small-time losers from director Louis Malle, Burt Lancaster stars as a voyeuristic, over-the-hill hood reduced to running a gambling racket and living off fake memories of days with famous gangsters of yesteryear. Paradoxically, it's one of Lancaster's best roles, and his performance is matched by that of Susan Sarandon as the woman with whom he becomes involved when a stash of drugs is stolen from the Mafia. Hard to define — it's neither a thriller nor a love story — this gangster movie displays a totally unexpected and abundant Gallic charm, while Sarandon is the perfect foil for Lancaster.

Halliwell's Film Guide

Elegiac character drama which often achieves the mood it seeks but on the whole remains too understated for its own good. There are some rich characterizations from Lancaster, as the loser revitalized by murder, Kate Reid as his elderly harridan of a love

One Last Job...

A Customer from Glasgow, Scotland, 30th September, 2004

ATLANTIC CITY stands the test of time. Burt Lancaster plays a retired mobster who always lacked real guts. But as a drug deal goes horribly wrong in front of him he finally summons up the courage to take justice into his own hands - and to help himself to the money and the women on offer.
The DVD offers no extras and an indifferent transfer.

Boring Boring Boring

Due to the big names and the fact that it was nominated for 5 academy awards, you'd have thought this would be a really good film. Yawn is all I can say.........no story line, no plot, no excitement - unless you think that a fake stabbing and someone shooting two people (which is so staged you wouldn't be able to see the wood for the ham acting) is good! - wooden acting, 1.5 solid hours of sleep inducing crap! If you suffer from insomnia, get this film........it's far better than counting sheep at getting anyone to fall asleep........what was that dear, did I miss the end.......

I rented this because I had read a review suggesting that Susan Sarandon was quite sexy in it. She was, but the rest of the movie wasn't really worth the effort!

An American Tale

neworder from Shropshire, 21st June, 2005

A wonderfully close-cut film, with a magical performance from Burt Lancaster as the washed-up crook in the sea-side city. The direction (by Louis Malle) and the filming are flawlessly masterful in this tale of love and misdeeds. Susan Sarandon gives one of her best performances as a petty crook's wife trying to make ends meet who Lancaster spies on from his appartment.

This is an American story produced in a French manner. Superb.

No cliches in this gangster film

I It is hardly an original plot line to have relatively innocent people caught up in the activities of the Mob. However, Atlantic City does it in a slightly different way, and the two main characters are anything but stereotypes. Burt Lancaster is a sort of retired minor gangster, full of untrue boastsabout his associations with the big Mob names of the past. His weakness is revealed as the story progresses, and Lancaster is wonderful in conveying the underlying pathos of the man. Susan Sarandon , in an early role, is equally convincing as a would-be star croupier who becomes involved through her devious ex-husband. Apart from being very attractive, she is very ambitious and hard as nails. The acting of the minor characters is excellent, and the story bowls along speedily with plenty of quirky humour. There is some violence, of course, but the overall impression is one of original and upbeat entertainment - and that's a rare feeling!
