Tensho Kata and Application

Edsel D'souza from Hastings, England, 18th November, 2005

I think Sensei Chris Rowen 7th Dan who studied under Sensei Gogen Yamaguchi, does a good job in explaining and demonstrating the Tensho Kata. This Kata has a lot of old Chinese Crane Style hand techniques, which have been lost in the Practice of Karate. Sensei Chris gives you good insight of how the seemingly soft moves when applied correctly and with intent can cause serious harm. He starts of with good Dojo practices and shows you how a Seiza or knelling is done in Japanese Budo with a very martial intent/attitude (unlike what we do in Aikido or other Samurai Aiki-jujitsu styles and in the way a Student respects his Master in the greeting). It is very good educational tool to whatever style of Karate you practice. I use to practice Goju-Ryu myself and help my son with his practice now, but practice Aikido myself now, also found the soft styles movements helpful in grappling, deflecting and pulling. I would recommend you buying a copy to keep for your collection as an educational tool to referee back to.
