J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy trilogy has played an enormous role in the popular culture of the last 50 years from the 1960s counterculture (several Gandalfs showed up at Woodstock) to today's largely Internet-based supporters of Peter Jackson's LORD OF THE RINGS films. Since their publication, the books have inspired the kind of intensely personal devotion usually associated with cult classics but it's a passion shared by too many millions of people to really be considered cultish. Directed and produced by Carlene Cordova, in association with online mega-fansite TheOneRing.net, the documentary RINGERS: LORD OF THE FANS takes a look at the long tentacles of influence sent out by a book that began its life as a tweedy, erudite Oxford professor's attempt to amuse himself. Hundreds of fantasy authors owe a large debt to Tolkien's work, rock bands like Led Zeppelin and Rush have referenced Middle Earth in their songs, and a plethora of failed attempts to bring the story to the big screen culminated in the massive global success of Jackson's epic adaptation. Tolkien's largely benevolent army of devotees represents an amazing range of genders, ages, and cultures. Narrated by hobbit-portrayer Dominic Monaghan, this affectionate look at a cultural phenomenon has time for the insights and opinions of everyday fans of the books, as well as of better-known Ringers like David Carradine, Terry Pratchett, Cameron Crowe, Clive Barker, Peter Jackson, and much of his films' casts.

Cute

A cute little memory of the Tolkin joy that hit us a few years back. Although we may not all queue up for 5 days to see the most recent Lord of the Rings film, all Tolkin Fans share the same love for compassion, bravery and fellowship. This film is a nice easy watch, with some comical moments. One of those MTV shows about how big something got. Worth a watch if you are a geek, or atleast, like geeky things. 'WERE NOT GEEKS, WERE RINGERS' HAHA that worse??

Not quite my precious

If interested in the phenomenum of the recently released films, as well as to find out some of the origins of the books then this is a good place to start. Although it is mainly aimed at portraying the feelings and views of the fans of the lord of the rings or 'ringers', which does border line on the obsessive (most of them being American could go a long way to explain this!), this documentary is a good way of spending an hour and a half in the compnay of fellow fans of the books/films/music of middle earth. Some of the extras are interesting (especially the one with five minutes of the guy who you only get a glimpse of in the documentary, who goes absolutely mental when asked why he likes/loves lord of the rings), however it was annoying in other extras when they started to repeat the same information and scenes from the feature which i had just watched! P.s. try and watch this doc. and not rock your head to the song Where there's a whip, there's a way.

Duller than the skys of Mordor

Well I am a big fan of Lord of the Rings, having read the books several times and loved the Peter Jackson films. However, I can honestly say that this particular dvd was absolutely dreadful. I expected a little more, but this was just a chance to look at how some fans take things to the extreme, dressing up in costumes and such like. I found myself skipping through the dvd after about 15 minutes of watching because it was just dull. I also found the cartoony graphics throughout very tiresome. In short, dont waste your time renting this unless you want to see some over the top fans thinking they are actually characters from the story, which is pretty much all this dvd is. Shame I couldnt give it a negative rating.
