Radio Times

The sixth and last of the popular Thin Man series that started in 1934, this is closer to film noir than the earlier films, with the sleuthing couple visiting several jazz clubs in their search for a killer. The sophisticated banter and the blend of screwball comedy and murder mystery survive, however, and the rapport between stars William Powell and Myrna Loy is still palpable (though actor Leon Ames claimed later that they never spoke to each other during the shooting). A satisfying finish to an immensely enjoyable series.

A Dry Martini Is Shaken to Waltz Time

Lord Pie from Canterbury, England, 6th November, 2004

A martini is not something that comes in a bottle marked 'Martini and Rossi'. A martini is pure gin with perhaps a little vermouth. We find William Powell's character teaching New York bartenders how to shake a martini before the plot thickens. A Dashiell Hammet book made into a film just after prohibition, The Thin Man is classic drinking humor at its finest. The chemistry between Powell and Loy is unbeatable. The script and lines simply some of the best humor, especially when contrasted to the modern times of crass, obvious jokes. Shed the chapeau and grab a rye...except you can't get rye in this friggin' country. Oh yeah, it's about a murder.

Sparkie from Bristol, UK, 7th March, 2006

William Powell (30mins) born 1892 - features film historians discussing Powell's life from the early days of motion pictures through a career that spanned some 90 films + who he married. .................................................. .................................................. .................... By the mid-1930's she had become MGM's most popular female star. .................................................. .............................. Nothing about her 4 failed marriages. .................................................. .................................................. .................... Great Hollywood comedy

Robert Dawson from Cardiff,Wales., 27th February, 2008

Powell and Loy on fine form as husband and wife, solving a murder. The series declines in quality with each film, but they're still worth watching.

Delightful

Enfin from , 3rd April, 2009

Although I found the first few scenes somewhat stilted, once Myrna Loy and William Powell appeared it felt less of a period piece. Their playfulness and banter, as well as the character of their dog, Aster, are the heart of this film. The mystery and its resolution is satisfyingly constructed but it is the wit, the humour, that holds it together.

Perfectly good old times

A Customer from Isleworth, 23rd January, 2009

This was a total surprise. My girlfriend loves this old stuff but I have to say this is absolutely great. Men have still stile and the leading lady is just incredibly sexy - and to think that a naked back and the slightest visibility of nipples through a nighty must have caused quite a stir in 42 makes me smile.

I enjoyed this film when I first saw it about a hundred years ago but now 2 1/2 stars would be the maximum.

Customer Review

A Customer from UK, 23rd June, 2008

My wife and I thoroughly enjoy this series. I introduced her to The Thin Man film, based on the novel by Dashiel Hammett (of Maltese Falcon fame), and she was immediately taken. Nick and Nora Charles present an interesting item, a married couple that have a mature and hilarious relationship with themselves, booze and detective work.

The surrounding characters provide a great backdrop for their antics, and with the constant supply of cocktails, this has to be a class act of the silver screen era.

The detective slant of it is rather good too, with a couple of nice twists in the mix for the more serious. Otherwise, its a great way to while away a rainy afternoon, watching what life was like (or could be like if you're a bit wet :)

Great films, definitely worth watching.
