Talent is Never Enough

Grizzlybear from Swindon, England, 10th October, 2005

Prior to viewing 'Overnight' I had read positive broadsheet and magazine reviews promising that this documentary would show the truth about fickleness of Hollywood and the brittleness of the American Dream in its charting of the rapid rise and fall of the young barkeeper turned film director Troy Duffy. On one level the films succeeds in conveying the reality of newcomer trying to keep body and soul together in Hollywood whilst promising his team thicker and thicker spreadings of 'jam tomorrow' but, I still felt somewhat shortchanged. The truth is it was was almost immediately obvious the main protangonist would be doomed to failure and the movie therefore lost much of its power for me. Troy is not so much the victim of the machinations of uncaring movie and record moguls setting him and his acolytes up for a fall, but his own massive ego and lack of interpersonal skills. I suppose the moral of this tale, if it has one, is that talent, drive and ambition will never be enough to succeed unless you can find a way of working with others.

Good film...

rhys peregrine from WALES!, 7th March, 2006

I know it's a documentary but this was one of the most entertaining films I've seen for a long time. Some people said they did'nt like this film because Troy Barker was just too much of an a***hole. Well, that's like saying you did'nt like Rambo because he was 'a bit aggressive.' Barker is as arrogant a person as you'll ever see. You won't like him...but you won't be able to stop watching him either. Five Stars.

How the Mighty Fall

NadeemF from from Saffron Walden, 29th November, 2005

Troy Duffy was the next big thing when he was signed in the 1990's to write direct and even make the soundtrack for the film 'The Boondock Saints'. Since you probably have neither heard of him nor the film you can guess how the story goes. While this is a tale of the fickle nature of Hollywood, and how a single man can make or break someone on a whim, it is enjoyable because Troy Duffy is a pillock with an overinflated ego. A good documentary, but lacking in interviews from Hollywood insiders - how much did Duffy annoy Harvey Weinstein?

Interesting Study on the Rise and Fall of Troy Duffy

Nabil Anwer from Richmond, 13th February, 2006

This documentary chronicles the meteoric rise and subsequent fall of Troy Duffy, the man responsible for The Boondock Saints. The man was discovered in a Bar where he worked as a bar tender, truly a fair-tale beginning. A bulk of the movie shows us what Troy Duffy is actually like, a racist and biggot whose big mouth doomed him to obscurity. His control extends to his friends and band, whom he gives zero credit. Some of the band members try their best to come to grips with Duffy's abuse. There is confrontation and drama, some of the best parts emerge. Overnight ends up being an interesting study on someone who clearly got lucky , right time right place. It also serves as a cautionary tale, anyone can fall victim to Hollywood, no one has it made.

"It's like..." Review

mattishdotcom from from Gloucestershire, 9th September, 2008

It's like There Will Be Blood shot as a documentary in the modern day but with a more satisfying ending. A bit of a modern morality tale – recommended.

Customer Review

A Customer from UK, 23rd June, 2008

This is a fly on the wall doc about a loud mouth Amercian fool called Troy Duffy who while working in a bar in Hollywood lands the ultimate movie deal with the Harvey Weinstein (Mr.Miramax) to write, direct, provide the soundtrack for, and get a fly on the wall doc made about this all happening...and get to own half the bar he is working in. I watched in amazement this train smash of a guy gradually destroy the biggest open goal opportunity of his, all his friends and one of his brothers lives. It's one of those great great things you just can't stop watching. A how-not-to guide in just about everything. Harvey Weinstein knew when to stop taking the calls...

You need to see it to believe it

dawnholder from from London, 5th April, 2008

This documentary is about a bouncer named Troy Duffy who won a million dollars in a script writing competition to make his film. Or there abouts. If your into filmmaking and want to make a career for yourself, then watch this and discover how NOT to go about having a solid career in the industry. Lol. This guy even has Willem Defoe in his film and stills messes it all up. What a loser.
