An entertaining and atmospheric supernatural love story with knock-out special effects. In ancient China, a young scholar takes shelter from the rain in a haunted temple where he falls for a beautiful ghost. With the aid of a Taoist monk, the young couple battle a variety of foes and even storm the gates of hell.

Haven't we been here before...

Your liking of A chinese Ghost Story 2 very much depends upon your opinion of the first film.

The thing is, both films are pretty much the same.. Martial arts mayhem, romance, comedy, horror and a little more mayhem. Everything is present and correct, the only problem being that this time round the makers lack the original charm of part one. We've certainly seen it all before and it's hardly a continuation. More of a rehash.

Thankfully they just about pull it off. If, like me, you're a fan of the first film then Part two will be almost as enjoyable as the original offering. If you weren't a fan however, shame on you but this probably won't light your candle either.

Incidently, part three isn't vastly different either. If it ain't broke...

Not as good as the first one

hazel dewar from Glasgow Scotland, 19th January, 2008

however still an enjoyable romp. It is a bit overlong and it did not keep me as interested as the first one A Chinese Ghost Story. That was a hard act to follow. The action is still amazing and I enjoyed it.

The same, only more so

I seem to be in a minority here, but I think this is marginally superior to the first film in the series, more confidently directed, and including just a touch of political and religious satire (the baddie turns into a statue of the Buddha when things get tough, and uses evil dao chants to hypnotise potential enemies) to add interesting complications to proceedings. You still get plenty of mugging from Leslie Cheung - who seems even more useless this time around - and lots of dodgy comedy (he's mistaken for a great wise man, a plot point that eventually goes nowhere); I can't be alone in wishing for a bit more fighting. The special effects are utterly useless, but that seems to be part of the fun. Enjoy.

Strange things ...

I watched this movie now for the approximately 20th time. So if you are looking for an expert on this movie, you just found it. Due to my nationality and maternal language, I watched A Chinese Ghost Story (1-3) most of the times in german sync. Compared to the engl. version it definitely wins from the artistic point of syncronisation. The german voices are much more involved, they feel the plot and transfer the tension far better then the english sync. I ended up watching it in chinese with english subs. I recommend you doing so, I think it is always interesting to listen to the true voices, plus you might learn 1-3 words. Pauye paulomie :)

Cardboard Monsters And Slime Galore.

Ian Davies from Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales, 28th May, 2006

There are more demon monsters in this sequel than there are ghosts, and dreadfully bad monsters at that. (But this is part of the fun.) Leslie Cheung, Wu Ma and Joey Wong all return, (Joey Wong is not the same character though.) and Jacky Cheung gives a memorable turn that is a comic highlight. Not that much kung fu action but always plenty going on. This is definitely a lot funnier than the first film that was far more emotional and ultimately sad. Entertaining, with some way over the top special effects and strange characters, but not as classy as the far superior 'A Chinese Ghost Story'.
