Two medical supply company workers unwittingly release several zombies from cylinders, where they've been trapped for many years. The nasty brain-eating creatures are starving hungry...

Radio Times

This enjoyable horror comedy marked the directorial debut of long-time sci-fi scribe Dan O'Bannon, of Dark Star and Alien fame. This semi-sequel to George A Romero's 1968 cult classic Night of the Living Dead is like an D C comic come alive, in that it'll make you laugh and squirm — often at the same time. “They're back. They're hungry. And they're not vegetarian,” blared the poster. O'Bannon cleverly makes the zombies — rather than the actors — the real stars of this movie and, unlike the Romero variety, these can speak, though they're mostly limited to spouting, “Brains, more brains!” The brain-eaters are the result of two bumbling workers who spill a missing army shipment of top-secret gas, which then contaminates the local cemetery where a gang of punks are holding a party. Later, after munching on some policemen, a zombie calls the local precinct and orders them to, “Send more cops!”. A must for horror fans, this was followed by two sequels of varying quality.

Gory funny brilliance

Melon from East Sussex, 25th August, 2004

This was billed as an 'unofficical sequel' to Romero's trilogy when it was released but O'Bannon's punk classic is a different kettle of satirical fish. It joins the ranks of those few horrors (like 'An American Werewolf In London') that successfully manage to be both genuinely hilarious and genuinely scary.

I absolutely loved this film when I was a kid, and it still cuts the mustard now. Everything about it is pitch perfect (indeed the sequels are a good example of how easily it could have slid into pure dreck) and is 90 minutes of pure 80's entertainment.

Braaainssss!!!

Mr. Zombie from the graveyard, 28th April, 2004

why do we zombies get such a raw deal? there i was simply minding my business being supended by my head in a warehouse, and the next thing i know i've got a pick-axe in my head. Honestly! Anyway, some of my friends were also disturbed but they weren't as understanding as me; they just decided to eat some cops and good-for-nothing kids...one of whom likes to get naked!

Anyway, let me get back to decomposing.

Good for a laugh!

Michael Coombes from Surrey, England, 18th July, 2004

I remember watching this film first time around so I decided to watch it again.

Two men unleash a deadly chemical that reactivates the dead with deadly consequences!

Watch out for the woman stripping - why?

The brain feasting monsters are very funny and the acting is terrible.

This is good for a laugh - not scary but very funny and you will be saying - braaaains!! for the rest of the day!

'Return Of The Living Dead'

I hadn't seen this ince I was a kid and had enjoyed it. I was expecting disappointment but there is something about this film that is just great! It's comical, got a fun 80's soundtrack and kept me watching!!! If you don't like zombie horrors, then avoid it, but for a good 80's horror spoof it delivers! 'Send more paramedics'...ha ha ha ;o)

Could have been so much better!

Laurentd from , 21st February, 2009

I had high hopes for this, I love zombie movies, trashy 80's horror etc... But this went nowhere, it had a few good ideas (loved the bright red haired punk girl dancing naked on top of some graves (as you do)) but it was very slow, the zombies had no consistency at all (one of them looked like a Playdo thing, others were more realistic) I kept expecting for more to happen but the script was a mess, I was expecting more gore, more laughs but hardly anything happen and then it ends on an abrupt and rather downbeat note.
