In Andy Tennant's (SWEET HOME ALABAMA, ANNA AND THE KING) delightful romantic comedy HITCH, Will Smith stars as Alex Hitchens, an urban 'date doctor' who helps the common man woo the woman of his dreams. Hitch will use any means necessary--dance lessons, back waxing--to instil romantic confidence in his clientele. Hitch was once a lonely wallflower himself, who learned about love and heartbreak the hard way. His latest project, Albert Brennaman (Kevin James), may be his most difficult. Brennaman, a junior accountant prone to clumsiness, has fallen head-over-heels for one of his clients, Allegra Cole (Amber Valleta), a well-known celebrity. To complicate things further, Hitch's dating dogma is shaken when he meets and falls for a beautiful gossip columnist, Sara Melas (Eva Mendes), whose sharp wit easily pierces his cool façade. Conflict arises when Melas uncovers Hitch's true profession and blames him for her best friend being dumped. HITCH is set in affluent hot spots around New York City, making for some splendid visuals. Tennant gets charming performances from all of his leads, especially James, who makes an amazing transition from television's KING OF QUEENS and nearly steals the spotlight from Smith with his talent for physical comedy. Nevertheless, James and Smith have excellent onscreen chemistry. Kevin Bisch's first script is full of clever, contemporary dialogue, alternately pointing out the silliness and the poignancy of love and dating.

Will Smith puts his easy charm to good use in this flimsy but appealing New York-set romantic comedy from Sweet Home Alabama director Andy Tennant. Smith plays a professional "date doctor" who discreetly helps ordinary guys woo the women of their dreams. When talk of Hitch's success reaches the ears of gossip columnist Eva Mendes, she decides to unmask the anonymous cupid, unaware that he's also the mishap-prone suitor trying to win her heart. Initially the film feels fresh and buoyant, thanks to a sleek script and genuine chemistry between its attractive leads. It's witty, full of romantic wisdom and makes up for in laughs what it lacks in substance. There's also strong support, with US sitcom star Kevin James almost stealing the show as Smith's goofy client. Unfortunately, as the overlong tale hits its final third, it abruptly loses its spark, and sharp and sassy is replaced by conventional and lazy.

superb.........

this film is superb. “Hitch” is the nickname of Alex 'Hitch' Hitchens played by Will Smith who provides a consultancy service with a difference. He will give advice on matters of the heart for lonely, lovesick bachelors, who are desperate to make the first move, on the lady of their dreams. He careful screens his clients, thus ensuring that their intentions towards their target ladies, are honourable and worthy. Sara on the other hand, is the career driven gossip columnist for a New York tabloid, always in the know, and one step ahead of the rest of the paparazzi pack, when hunting down the latest celebrity rumours. She and Hitch meet up at a stylist New York club, where Hitch proves he can take a huge gulp of his own medicine, by charming Sara into coming out with him. the story really gets going, when the two main characters get their wires crossed, when Hitch’s latest client, is the bumbling but cute Albert, who is pining after millionaire socialite Allegra Cole, someone who Sara is all too desperate to get on her front page day after day. mayhem ensues. well worth renting out.

Big Will fights off the cheese...

James Wright from London, England, 11th March, 2005

I'd like to start by saying 'this isn't your average rom-com'. But it is, exactly that. The plot, the characters, the gags, all straight off the production line. But the performances, from Smith's timing and swagger, to Mendez' (over)confident smoulders, make it work well enough to give that extra star. It's a good example of a bad genre, and a near perfect dist date movie:A few very funny moments, lots of contented grinning and just enough Men vs. Women debate to keep the conversation flowing afterwards...

Does What it Says on the Box

Vin01 from Surrey, 28th September, 2005

If you're after a heavy, intelligent movies, this isn't for you. But if want something lightweight and entertaining for its own sake then it's hard to fault this film. There are some genuine laugh out loud moments and the supporting cast put in some good performances.

On the whole a great feel good film - I might even buy it.

If you're looking for a deep meaningful movie, go elsewhere!

Del and Deb from Portsmouth England, 29th July, 2005

Let's be honest, it's a Will Smith movie. Warmth, compassion and a wide spread of humour. That's what you get. Some smart dialogue and some memorable moments, but nothing that's going to rock your world. 90 minutes of Date movie, watching people make you laugh and fall in love. Just Fine by me!

Extremely boring. Don't even remember adding this to my list. Advise everyone not to bother renting this. No storyline, weak ending.

There's a hitch...

Jammy74 from , 4th February, 2010

Will Smith in a slightly-blokey romantic comedy isn't a big stretch for him or anybody else involved, and sadly Hitch is spectacularly unromantic and sadly not very funny either. so it's a bit of a failure. To be fair, it's watchable and there is the odd good line, but it's all very safe and predictable with an ending you can see coming pretty much before the Sony Pictures logo at the start. If you love this sort of thing no doubt you'll lap it up. If you need a little more from your comedy, look elsewhere.

it was quite good, loses it comedy feel towards the end and gets a bit serious. laughs at the start make up for seriousness towards end.
