But for all their courage and devotion, the Scots are still no match for the professional English army. Rout and massacre follow and the Prince is forced into hiding, with an entire army on his trail.

Radio Times

Mauled by the British press on its original release, this shoddy costume drama must rank as one of the worst films ever made in this country. The great Alexander Korda acted as executive producer and it was written by playwright Clemence Dane, but it contains some quite dreadful dialogue delivered in atrocious accents by an all-star cast led by a hopelessly miscast David Niven. The studio sets look homemade, but they are nowhere near as embarrassing as Ian Whyte's twee, cliché-ridden score. Only cinematographer Robert Krasker and Margaret Leighton as Flora MacDonald emerge with any credit. A very sorry episode indeed.

David Niven Boxset

no criticism of the stories, they are fine if you appreciate good old British Cinema material, however the DVD transfer is amongst the poorest I have ever seen, I usually project my films on to a modest size screen approx 41/2 feet X 31/2 feet, and you couldn't watch these films they were so grainy and soft, so I put them on the T.V and they weren't much better. THESE OUGHT TO BE WITHDRAWN FROM THE LIBRARY they are absolute rubbish don't touch them at any price, I am just thankful that I only rented them and didn't waste money buying them.

A classic old British film

A Customer from Folkestone, 8th February, 2009

I've always loved this film. Bonnie Prince Charlie, played by David Niven, returns to Scotland with his small band of loyal followers to overthrow the English king and reclaim the throne for his father. It's a classic film of honour, bravery, patriotism and valour. Highly unrealistic but very entertaining. Despite the very English Niven playing the Italian born-Scottish heir to the throne, it's wonderful stuff.
