Radio Times

The fact that Casey Robinson returned to script this sequel to the 1935 swashbuckler Captain Blood might have given cause for optimism. But, unfortunately, the stunt casting of Errol Flynn's son Sean in the title role singularly fails to pay off, for while he shares his father's dashing looks, he has none of his insouciant screen presence. Filmed in Spain by Italian director Tulio Demicheli, the story rattles along, with a pirate attack and a race against a tidal wave providing the action highlights. But Flynn's scenes with over-protective mother Ann Todd and imperilled passenger Alessandra Panaro are surprisingly engaging.

Halliwell's Film Guide

Modestly produced but quite exhilarating pirate adventure notable for making a star of Errol Flynn. Direction makes the most of very limited production values.

The Radio Times Quote above is an error

RPM from Bolton, England, 1st February, 2006

The Quote from the Radio Times refers to 'Son of Captain Blood' made in 1962 starring Sean Flynn which is saved somewhat by Flynn Juniors boyish charm. ( He died only a few years later as a dispatch rider whilst on Army service). 'CAPTAIN BLOOD'(1935) is a classic of the old school. Brilliant direction, script and acting- the three things that films HAVE to get right to survive the years (which are sadly missing from many recent productions) Look out for the sword fight between Flynn and Rathbone. An epic swashbuckler DO NOT MISS IT!!.

Bloody good fun

RJNeb2 from , 10th September, 2006

The film that launched the virile and glamorous Erroll Flynn on a delighted movie-going public, 'Captain Blood' is a consummate vehicle for the man, showcasing his physical prowess and charm to great effect. He plays an Irish doctor, dragooned into slavery in Jamaica who eventually becomes a pirate and wins the heart of the lovely Olivia de Havilland. Ironically the film becomes marginally less interesting when he finally dons the pirate mantle but for most of the way this is a strong example of Michael Curtiz's seamlessly effective direction at its best. The first film to feature a score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, and it's a magnificently florid one.

One of the ten best films ever made

jennifer claire from Ireland, 22nd March, 2007

Fantstic feel, lines, action, script, storyline, - great whacks of this film were lifted for Pirates of the Carribean- and all around good fun. Flynn wasn't much of an actor but it works brilliantly just the same. Noble sentimenst and heroism to die for.
