In this postmodern exploitation flick loosely based on Little Red Riding Hood, the uneducated daughter of a drug-addicted prostitute flees the foster-care system in search of her long-lost grandmother but meets up instead with a serial killer. Vanessa (Reese Witherspoon), a nearly illiterate firebug and serial shoplifter, desperately clings to normalcy even though her mother turns tricks, does drugs, and manages to ignore the fact that the girl's stepfather Michael T. Weiss has been abusing her for years. When both of her parents get arrested, Vanessa steals the car of her family-services caseworker (Conchata Ferrell) and heads up Interstate 5 in search of her paternal grandmother, who's never met her. Car problems force her to accept a ride from Bob Wolverton (Kiefer Sutherland), a youth counselor who uses charm and sympathy to get the girl to open up. Confessing the sordid details of her childhood to Bob, Vanessa is shocked when he suddenly declares that she's one of the garbage people and that he plans to murder her and have sex with her corpse. Bob, it turns out, is the I-5 Murderer, who's been slaughtering young prostitutes in the Los Angeles area. Thanks to a gun borrowed from her fiancé, Vanessa manages to turn the tables on Bob, shooting him repeatedly and leaving him for dead. He survives, Vanessa is arrested, and the two meet up again in court -- with her unrepentant, even though the police disbelieve her story, him flanked by his prim wife (Brooke Shields) and the righteous indignation of the American legal system. Locked up in the juvie for psychological evaluation, Vanessa gets in touch with her wild side and eventually escapes, heading off to her fateful meeting with grandma. Although Freeway was originally filmed for HBO, vigorously positive critical response eventually earned it a theatrical release. Alanna Ubach, who portrays Vanessa's nemesis/accomplice Mesquita, would go on to appear with Witherspoon in Legally Blonde. Freeway also features two Clueless alumni: Dan Hedaya, as a police detective, and Brittany Murphy, as the disfigured lesbian who befriends Vanessa in lock-up. Michael T. Weiss, who previously appeared in gay indie Jeffrey, appears in both Freeway and its sequel, Freeway 2: Confessions of a Trickbaby.~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

Radio Times

This deeply twisted version of Little Red Riding Hood brought the exceptionally talented Reese Witherspoon to the attention of a wider audience. She plays a feisty young teenager from a dysfunctional family who sets off to find her grandmother, falling foul of psycho Bob Wolverton (Kiefer Sutherland) en route. Witherspoon is a revelation as the foul-mouthed teenage rebel, Sutherland is great as her nemesis, and there are enjoyable cameos from Amanda Plummer, Dan Hedaya and Brooke Shields. It went straight to video in the UK, but don't let that put you off.

A forgotten odd gem

AnnBowman from Aberdeenshire, 28th June, 2004

This deliciously dark fairy tale, roughly based around Little Red Riding Hood but updated to include serial-killing paedophiles, drive-by shootings and teenage prostitution, benefits greatly from some fortuitous casting.

Featuring Kiefer Sutherland in his post-Young Guns/Flatliners and pre-24 indie movie stage, much of the film is a dialogue-driven two-hander between his slimey psychologist and a young trailer-trash Reese Witherspoon. Making the role of the violent, illiterate, thieving (but strangely moral) arsonist Vanessa her own, this is still probably her best role to date (though fans of Sweet Home Alabama may be slightly shocked!)

A little patchy in places, but great weird entertainment from start to finish.

this film was my introduction to matthew bright and since i saw it, he's become my second favourite director. i had only seen witherspoon in pleasantville and the twenty-some-odd minutes of leagally blonde that i could sit through, but this cements her status as a great actress. this is both hilarious and darkly disturbing, a must for thriller fans.

Fills a quiet night well enough

Graham from UK, 13th November, 2006

I honestly have not seen a movie quite like this before, Freeway is based loosely on the Little Red Riding Hood story and shows Reese Witherspoon as you will have never before seen her. She plays a troubled teenager, classic white trash, who following the jailing of her prostitute mother and step father decides to track down her Grandma. Her journey takes an interesting twist when she meets serial killer Sutherland. This movie is funny in places, violent and largely entertaining, the acting good enough whilst the script provides a comedy and few basics twists, an average film that fills a quiet night well enough. 3 Stars

Poor White Trash Teen, Meets Big Bad Wolf, In A Funked Up Fairytale!!

A Customer from Wolverhampton, 10th September, 2009

I have wanted to see this film for years and had heard a lot of mixed reviews, but was pleasantly surprised when I rented this one. Ok!! We have the red riding theme, the illiterate trailer park girl complete with slutty wardrobe and trash talk mouth, an abusive junkie stepfather, her prostitute mother and a boyfriend who clearly is involved in the whole L.A gang scene. Throw in a social worker and the unknown grandmother into the mix and welcome to 'Vanessa Lutz's' life. The gorgeous 'Reese Witherspoon' plays the feisty jailbait teen with real grit, but along with her constant profanities and violent outbursts, you also get to see her vulnerable side and a quiet innocence in Vanessa's character. Enter the big bad 'Bob Wolverton' (Kiefer Sutherland), a man who in secret is the infamous freeway serial killer, but to his loving wife and friends he is a real pillar of the community. After Vanessa decides to hitch a ride with the 'Harmless' Bob, he in return is plotting to make this troubled naive young girl his next victim. Unfortunately for the 'Wolf' he may have severley underestimated his new prey as he is about to become a casualty of 'Red's' inner rage. Although the fantastic 'Sutherland' is the big name here in 1996, the real star of this movie is the fresh faced 'Witherspoon' who was yet to make her breakthrough movie 'Fear' later that year with hunky 'Mark Wahlberg'. Look out for a good support cast such as 'Brittany Murphy' (Girl Interrupted), 'Brooke Shields' (Pretty Baby), 'Amanda Plummer' (Pulp Fiction) and 'Dan Hedaya' (Clueless). A highly entertaining weekend rental with some very funny moments and Reese is totally adorable with her big smile and southern twang. :)

B movie

A Customer from London, 10th May, 2009

This is a grotesque transformation of Little Red Riding Hood. Consistently interesting and sometimes quite surprising. B movie because that seems to be where the actors pitch it, Kiefer Sutherland especially. Odd but worth seeing.

Black Comedy Delight

A Customer from Carmarthen, 23rd December, 2008

This black comedy is a delight although there is some necessary violence. The characters are well drawn and well acted particularly by R Witherspoon in what I think is an early role - she certainly looks like she has fun playing her character. But the rest of the cast do well and just shows that give an actor including supporting actors a good script and they contribute to making a film worth watching.

Reese rules

Nicknamessuck from , 9th October, 2008

It's not a great film, but Reese's performance is quite hilarious. And the film's sympathy for a juvenile criminal violent prostitute is fantastic!
