Peter O'Toole makes a handsome Casanova, but that's about the only good thing I can say about the movie. This, and Nina Sosanya's portrayal of Bellino, the castratto that Casanova falls in lust with. The script is utterly unoriginal and melodramatic, with none of the brilliance, charm, and humor of Casanova's memoirs. The characters get all jumbled up in order to advance the insipid plot of Casanova's love/obsession for Henriette. The famous episode of the escape from 'The Leads', masterfully described on several dozen pages, dazzling with ingeniousness, is now attributed to a fit of rage that the Cavalier was experiencing when he heard that Henriette was marrying his mortal enemy, Grimani (in fact, his benefactor and very probably his father)! Henriette was long gone by the time Casanova was imprisoned, she was most certainly not a virgin, and her departure, although painful, was indeed forgotten. So, do yourself a favor and read the book (Willard Trask's translation). It will give you many weeks of utter pleasure.
