Welcome to the helter-skelter Curley household. Dessie and Kay are proud parents of six loud, lively children. When their daughter Sharon announces that she is pregnant and refuses to name the father, shock-waves reverberate through the family and the neighbourhood.

Adapted by Roddy Doyle from his own novel, this sassy comedy drama was something of a disappointment after his earlier slice of working-class Dublin life, The Commitments. Sometimes funny, sometimes touching, the film benefits from a few snorting one-liners and some solid ensemble playing, although the cast occasionally gets carried away during the very stagey shouting matches. The main problem, however, is that director Stephen Frears too often allows the comedy to slip into sitcom and the drama to come across as something from a social-conscience soap opera. The Van, the final part of the trilogy, was released in late 1996.
