SpongeBob SquarePants takes leave from the town of Bikini Bottom in order to track down King Neptune's stolen crown. |
Children and adults who have turned Nickelodeon's aquatic hero into a cartoon cult will need no urging to see this movie. But even those unfamiliar with the undersea fast-food employee living in a Bikini Bottom pineapple will find the trippy action, hip absurdity and self-aware silliness of director/co-writer Stephen Hillenburg's joyful creation a lot more fun that expected. Passed over for promotion at the Krusty Krab restaurant, SpongeBob (voiced by Tom Kenny) and his dumb starfish buddy Patrick (Bill Fagerbakke) set out on a quest to distant Shell City to reclaim the crown stolen from King Neptune (Jeffrey Tambor) and protect the Krusty Krab's special Krabby Patty recipe. They're helped by Neptune's daughter Mindy (Scarlett Johansson) and hindered by hired hitman Dennis (Alec Baldwin). With David Hasselhoff making a live-action cameo, there's never a dull moment in this multi-level extravaganza, in which kids can identify with SpongeBob's wacky view of the world while adults enjoy the irreverent sight gags.

Halliwell's Film Guide
Engagingly silly, deliberately immature, cheerful nonsense though its cheap and stylised approach to animation looks over-stretched on the big screen.
