Radio Times

Children and adults who have turned Nickelodeon's aquatic hero into a cartoon cult will need no urging to see this movie. But even those unfamiliar with the undersea fast-food employee living in a Bikini Bottom pineapple will find the trippy action, hip absurdity and self-aware silliness of director/co-writer Stephen Hillenburg's joyful creation a lot more fun that expected. Passed over for promotion at the Krusty Krab restaurant, SpongeBob (voiced by Tom Kenny) and his dumb starfish buddy Patrick (Bill Fagerbakke) set out on a quest to distant Shell City to reclaim the crown stolen from King Neptune (Jeffrey Tambor) and protect the Krusty Krab's special Krabby Patty recipe. They're helped by Neptune's daughter Mindy (Scarlett Johansson) and hindered by hired hitman Dennis (Alec Baldwin). With David Hasselhoff making a live-action cameo, there's never a dull moment in this multi-level extravaganza, in which kids can identify with SpongeBob's wacky view of the world while adults enjoy the irreverent sight gags.

Halliwell's Film Guide

Engagingly silly, deliberately immature, cheerful nonsense though its cheap and stylised approach to animation looks over-stretched on the big screen.

superb family film

williamsgwynfa from , 24th April, 2007

my children love spongebob, particularly when spongebob consoles himself, with ice cream sundaes when he doesn't get promoted. this causes he and his best friend Patrick to lose control. There's trouble brewing in Bikini Bottom. Someone has stolen King Neptune's crown, and it look like Mr. Krab, SpongeBob's boss, is the culprit. Though he's just been passed over for the promotion of his dreams, when Mr. Krab opens up another Krusty Krab restaurant, where he names Squidward as the new manager, SpongeBob stands by his boss, and along with his best pal Patrick, sets out on a treacherous mission to Shell City to reclaim the crown and save Mr. Krab's life. could plankton, Mr Krab's rival, have put plan Z into action, to steal the crown? watch it to find out. I am not going to spoil the plot for you. Spongebob is a young sponge who works at a fast-food restaurant, that serves Krabby Patties, with his neighbour Squidward. His best friend is Patrick Starfish, who lives under a rock and has a very low IQ. Still, their friendship carries them through many a tight spot, as they strive for manliness. well worth watching

Superponge!

Cloughie from , 4th April, 2005

Couldn't fault it. Took my 7 year old to the cinema to see it and laughed as much as he did! Don't miss David Hasselhoff's cameo appearance. Patrick is the real 'star' here though, he has some great lines, especially at the bogus ice cream vendor's stall.

Awesome... SpongeBob Squarepants rocks! A cameo by the Hoff only serves to magnify how positively hilarious and imaginative this cartoon is. Anyone who can't enjoy this movie must be a grouch!
