Tale of love, when young Gaspard goes in search of Lena the girl he thiks he loves.

Rating of 4 stars out of 5
Radio Times

Like his earlier films, Claire's Knee and Pauline at the Beach, this is a sunny treatise on the agonies of holiday romance from director Eric Rohmer. This time, however, there's a male protagonist, with Melvil Poupaud playing the graduate student waiting for his girlfriend to join him at the seaside. Torn between his love of music and his infatuations with girlfriend Aurélia Nolin, vacation waitress Amanda Langlet and her friend Gwenaëlle Simon, his prevarications are as natural as they are frustrating, as comic as they are suspenseful. Displaying again Rohmer's gift for capturing the vernacular and behaviour of youth, this third instalment of his Tales of the Four Seasons series is an absolute delight.

Dont waste your time

I think you either like this or hate it....theres no in between really. I actually felt that I had been cheated out of the use of my time when this reached its closing credits. A dreadful film that had no character development and actually rather dull and boring people to start with...perhaps that was the point, but it was lost on me. Dreadful, really dreadful. Waste of time...I am staggered that the director of this film is regarded as a genius....perhaps a genius in the art of boring people to death?

A low-key pleasure

phil jenkins from w sussex, 4th October, 2006

The Breton coast in July. A gifted young holidaymaker juggles with his desire for sexual adventure and also that 'special' relationship. In the end, he finds his priorities lie elsewhere - but not before the sudden presence of three girls in his life causes amusing uncertainty and indecision. Full of convincing dialogue and attractive scenery. NB: the least showy film you'll ever see (the only thing it shows off being the resorts of Brittany)

Intelligent cinema

headandheart from , 25th March, 2009

I agree this is a little slow, but that suited me. It has an attractive cast, lovely locations and is beautifully photographed. In general I enjoyed it, although many men will ruefully conclude 'I wish I'd had your problems' concerning the male character's sundry romantic dilemmas.

Customer Review

A Customer from UK, 23rd June, 2008

"A Summer's Tale" is possibly the best of Eric Rohmer's "Four Seasons" films, although "A Winter's Tale" runs it extremely close. This captivating film tells the tale of a solitary, slightly morose but handsome young graduate whose summer holiday in a French seaside resort is taken up by a series of romantic and platonic relationships with three attractive, intelligent young females. He finds it difficult to decide which one to choose, each having their own particular charms. Which girl will he pick-if any ? I liked "A Summer's Tale"the characterisation ,acting and direction were all exquisite and the film was absorbing and intriguing throughout.

From teens to adults.

A fine portrayal of the insecurities and self-doubts that we feel when we are adolescents, no matter how intelligent and educated we are ( the main character has a Maths. Degree. ) With the 'choices' offered by three girlfriends ( one is platonic for now ), he is unable to make up his mind and the debates and discussions ebb and flow well. As to any final choice being made, you'll have to watch the film ....

IF YOU LIKE ROHMER. . .

charledickens from , 19th June, 2009

This film contains some great Rohmer touches and one stunning sequence where a boy and girl walk the beach talking for what seems like miles and miles. There are lots of talking sequences - and they seem to go on for hours and hours. It's a feature of Eric Rohmer that the protagonists can talk for ever, seemingly and this is no exception. However, we were left with the feeling - what is all the fuss about?

Not my favourite

Trionon from , 18th October, 2008

Confused young man, fast forwaded towards the end, really stopped caring. Brittany's beaches are the best part of the film for me
