Intelligent, witty AND British

Philip Sharman from Kettering, England, 23rd April, 2005

You'd be more than forgiven for missing this when it was aired on BBC 3 and BBC 2, because of erratic and inconsistent scheduling and little to no advertising. And those plugs that were aired completely mis-sold the programme. Why is British television so scared of getting behind clever drama like this? Do they think we're not capable of understanding brilliant inciteful writing like this? Or maybe that we can't think and be entertained at the same time? Outlaws crams an awful lot of event into every half hour episode and even more social commentary, without being preachy or cloying. It offers a realistic, enthralling and very, very funny view of Britain's underclass at it's most desperate and misguided. When put together with the magnificent soundtrack, and superlative acting and direction, there is not a single reason not to rent this series.

I've worked for a firm like this lot.....

Lee McIlwaine from Nottinghamshire, 21st December, 2005

This is a smashing series. I have worked in a law firm just like this . The series is full of the usual suspects one sees in real life and the actors portray the banter with the custody officers well. All in all a day in the life of a criminal defence firm very very well captured on screen. But it does not end there . It has great story lines , a good script and touches on some of the sad reality of life in a small law firm and the lives of both the lawyers and the clients. However it is not without its humour and its worth a rental. Trust me on this I am a lawyer ...

Classy and Clever

A Customer from Fareham, 12th November, 2005

I have to wonder why repetitive comedy with same jokes in same order with same punchlines like Lttle Britain or Fast Show get so many plaudits when clever, witty and thought provoking comedy like this get nothing in the way of promotion or decent air time. Outlaws is funny because you know the people in it, Daniels is brilliant at the cynical, everwhinging lawyer that bends the rules a little to win. Georgia Mckenzie is brilliant as his opposite number, often putting Daniels in his place. Well acted and well written it touches delicate subjects and isn't scared to show things how they are. If you like a bit more than the obvious in your humour, Outlaws is a must.

Thieves, Liars, Blaggers... and that's just the Lawyers

DRfhibess from from Birmingham, 1st May, 2008

There's been quite a lot of nice stuff written about this programme, about how dazzlingly stylish and witty it is. Now that's all true, but what really makes it stand out is that it's probably the most accurate portrayal of the criminal justice system yet to hit our televisions. Steve Coombes, the creator, spent a good deal of time hanging around police stations and magistrates courts so he could find out what happens and bring it to our screens. So what we have isn't your normal crime show's clever criminal gangs, but a succession of hopeless drug addicts and neglected kids. The big fish might occasionally show up, but are easily distinguished by the fact they get to walk. Into this world are thrown a few characters: Dunbar, the cynical, amoral one; Gulliver, the idealistic rookie and Sarah Beckenham, the tough, ball-breaking career woman. So far so cliché, but the wave of coolness and comedy, not to mention the nigh-perfect casting, keep Outlaws from feeling tired.

what a loss to tv scheduling!

jennywren69 from , 29th April, 2008

This could have become one of BBC's best comedy/drama series. It had such potential and the BBc just never promoted it -what a shame! If you missed it PLEASE try it and I am sure you wont be disappointed. Phil Daniels is a genius! Am so glad that at least it is on dvd to view. This is a must see show-tell all!
