Run time: 117 mins
Genres: Action/Adventure | Thriller

Released: (unknown)

Sam Raimi breaks out of genre films with this tight, effective thriller. When two brothers, Hank (Bill Paxton) and Jacob (Billy Bob Thornton), and their friend Lou (Brent Briscoe), find 4.4 million dollars inside a crashed plane, they believe they've found the financial answer to all their problems. All they have to do is keep it a secret until the plane is discovered and any investigations are completed. This proves to be easier said than done, however, when the three men (as well as Hank's wife, Sarah, played by Bridget Fonda), each with their different reasons, begin to lose trust in the others. When an FBI agent comes to town, the tension becomes explosive resulting in deceit and, ultimately, murder. Raimi makes brilliant use of icy Minnesota locales. Thornton's performance was recognised by the Academy with a nomination for Best Supporting Actor. The script, by Scott B. Smith from his own novel, was also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Radio Times

Shallow Grave meets Fargo in this thriller about the corrupting influence of greed from director Sam Raimi. Three men find a crashed plane in thick snow containing over $4 million and hesitantly decide to split the loot once they are sure they won't be suspected. Of course, everything that could go wrong, or might point the finger at their pact, does so in Raimi's grim fairy tale. Completely eschewing the frenetic approach of his Evil Dead work, Raimi comes up with a poetic suspenser that delves unassumingly into the cryptic regions of human nature. The uneasy mood is underscored by two marvellous performances from Bill Paxton and Billy Bob Thornton (Oscar- and Golden Globe-nominated for this role) as the two brothers in the pledge triangle.

A deft, chilling thriller of corruption and greed, charting an inexorable slide from integrity to betrayal and worse.

Simply Rent

MC from , 29th March, 2005

I've never understood how this Sam Raimi film has been overlooked. It's one of his most subtle, yet effective works to date. The story revolves simply around 3 characters who's lives are changed when they find 4 million dollars in a crashed plane. Although there is no trademark Raimi camera wizardy, the acting, pace and tension created means there is never a dull moment from start to finish.

Definitely worth a rent, if not a buy!

excellent

Mark MacMillan from scotland, 10th January, 2006

Ever question your morals ? - well this film examines those of three working class men who stumble across 4.4 million which ends up being a bit of a handful to say the least. This starts as a straightforward plot which becomes a bit more of a nightmare then you were expecting, although maybe Sam Raimi still had a bit of Evil Dead still in him before he went 100 % mainstream. Very good if a little far fetched

What an absolute gem!!

martin legg from Isle of Wight, 5th June, 2005

This film has to be one of the most surprising and underrated movies, the cast are top notch with Paxton and Thornton especially convincing and moving...their relationship is brilliantly portrayed and deserving of the plaudits it received on the movies release. Sam Raimis direction never fails to keep you engrossed,(surely down to his Horror movie roots!!) and the feeling of being on a downward spiral with every small nuance taking you nearer to an inevitable but still surprising conclusion is masterful stuff...Highly recomended.

Money is bad!!!

SeekerSolace from , 27th December, 2009

Beware next time you are out in the woods. Especially if you are in the company of your backward brother and his red-neck buddy. If it's snowing and there are lots of mysterious crows around then I suggest you get off home asap to your loving, highly principled wife. She's sure to have some refreshing. warming soup ready for you once she gets back from her day job at the small town library. If you happen to come across a small plane buried in the snow with a huge bag of cash in the back then just pretend you haven't seen it and run off home to your happy life in small town America. No? Well don't say i didn't warn you. The basic premise of this film is that a large sum of money will turn you into a psychotic, gun wielding, brother/neighbor/farmer/gangster ( have i missed anyone? ) murdering loser. A simple plan to keep the money turns out to be anything but. Like some modern Shakespearean tragedy ( or is that comedy?), Bill Paxton morphs from local hardware store owner to serial killer in an attempt to keep hold of his lucky find in a plot that has more holes in it than Miss Havisham's wardrobe. It's well acted and the cinematography is fairly impressive but it gets more and more ludicrous as it goes along. One of those films you watch when there really is nothing else to do. Not bad but not very good either.

I would have spent that money so fast there would be no movie to make if Ifound it like that, but maybe I am financially reckless and morally unscrupulous... Contains a spoiler? Oh yeah.

A Simple Plan (1998)

An excellent movie which almost lives up to the book by Scott Smith. One disappointment is that the film omits the real ending of the book. Never mind. If you like a move that draws you in and makes you feel frustrated for the character(s) then watch this. The film focuses on how circumstances can make someone act so badly that, step back from the story and you see its wrong, but it is oh so easy to see why he reacts the way he does. A great psychological film with quality and believeable acting.
