Starring: Peter Cook | Dudley Moore
Director: Russell Mulcahy
Studio: UNIVERSAL PICTURES UK
Run time: 89 mins
Genres: Comedy
Languages: English
Released: October 30, 2000

Peter Cook and Dudley Moore put on the guises of Derek and Clive one final time in DEREK AND CLIVE GET THE HORN. The film mostly records the two feuding stars as they are in the studio recording their AD NAUSEUM record. It consists of a number of brilliant comic sketches as well as a wealth of footage of Pete and Dud verbally abusing each other, mostly while drunk. Famously banned by the British Board of Film Censors upon its completion, this film is not only an excellent documentation of one of the funniest comic duos of the 20th century, but is also a fascinating portrait of the excesses and tension between two creative minds who have come to an impasse.

Not their best

Mark S from London, 27th February, 2005

Peter Cook and Dudley Moore recreate their more offensive double act Derek and Clive for a final unscripted session. It is fascinating to watch these two comedy legends try and out-battle each other in comic timing and effect, but apart from the occasional moment of genious by Peter Cook and the recreation of earlier funny sketches, there isn't much to laugh about here. Dudley Moore desperately attempts to involve himself in Cook's sketches but normally to the detriment of the humour, and many scenes degenerate into a trade-off of insults along the lines of 'you f***ing c**t' repeatedly. More interest arises just watching the awkward interaction of these two - one cannot be sure how well they were still getting on at this point after Dudley had cracked Hollywood.

Dont get it

Mark MacMillan from scotland, 8th May, 2006

..occasionally Peter Cook latches onto a funny thread which Dud destroys with infantile rubbish and no spontaneity at all ...

overall superb.

OK, not one for the easily offended! Pete & Dud here show themselves the godfathers of adult comedy.

Everything from Viz to Chubby Brown to anyone who swears owes a huge debt to their Derek & Clive creations.

It's all improvised in the studio, so it does take a little adjusting to at first but there is some utter genius on here.

Sure, there's a few misfires but overall superb.

Cult indeed

A Customer from Milton Keynes, 26th May, 2004

As with most humour the influences of their peers is evident, as is the fact that much of their material has been emulated since.
Obviously some are going to be aware of Cooke and Moore as this duo, but many of the younger amongst us (and I'm 30) may have heard of but never actually experienced.
Is it worth it? Yes certainly, particularly if you are a fan of Python, Steve Coogan, Matt Lucas, Reeves and Mortimer.. etc.
Some zany and off the wall comedy, some great ad-lib hung off a well written and well rehearsed (I believe the duo were nearing the end of their time together when this was filmed) ultimately hilarious script.

Herbal Cigarettes provided by Haile Sellasse eh?

you've got to be a fan

Derek and Clive at their unscripted, drunken best. Or worst, depending on your point of view. You HAVE to be a fan to enjoy this, otherwise it'll just pass you by. I am a fan, but still found myself drifting off at times.

MOSTLY BORING!

A Customer from Pinner, England, 23rd November, 2006

Well first I have never seen anyone that, according to the hype, was drunk stupid throughout appear so sober and have his normal perfect diction in tact- Peter Cook. He may have been falling down drunk at the end but well before then I was fiddling about on my laptop listening out with 'half an ear'. Dudley Moore didn't seem the second class citizen of the piece that legend has it he was. Maybe this was something to do with the fact that the BRILLIANT Peter Cook WASN'T! As there is nothing to see here it would be much better on a CD so one could do other things while listening to it. An absolute must if it were given away as a promotion.
