The only real problem with Stir of Echoes has nothing to do with the movie itself, but with unlucky coincidence. Adapted from a Richard Matheson novel, this film arrived around the same time as The Sixth Sense. Surface similarities made it suffer by cursory comparison and the competing film's phenomenal success. It's a pity, because this one features one of Kevin Bacon's best performances, in a psychological thriller that makes a lot more right moves than wrong ones.

Bacon plays a blue-collar guy who laments his ordinary life, only to learn, when his sister-in-law (Ileanna Douglas) hypnotizes him, that he is a "receiver" capable of seeing spirits and split-second glimpses of past and future events. It's a torturous gift to have--especially since his friendly Chicago neighbourhood possesses a dark secret--and Bacon plays the role with an appropriate mixture of obsession and internalised torment. Similarity to The Sixth Sense applies only to the basic premise and the character of Bacon's young son. Otherwise, this is more of a hard-edged journey of self-discovery, marital crisis, and recovery, with Bacon's wife (played by the highly underrated Kathryn Erbe) involved in an underdeveloped sub-plot about a group of people who share Bacon's gift as paranormal "receivers". Furthering his career as a writer-director of intelligent thrillers, David Koepp makes a few mis-steps in pacing and thematic overkill, but overall Stir of Echoes is a sharp, sensitive thriller that unfolds to reveal a dramatically satisfying solution to its mystery. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

Radio Times

In the US, David Koepp's creepy supernatural tale was completely overshadowed by The Sixth Sense. However, while it isn't as smart or satisfying, it delivers a handful of extremely frightening moments and a credible performance from Kevin Bacon as a man haunted by startling visions. Using jolting cuts and stylised camerawork to evoke fear rather than contemporary, effects-driven shocks, Koepp immerses the audience in an atmospheric mystery involving hypnotism, psychic powers, a dead girl and Bacon's son, who seems to share his “gift”. The film's biggest flaw is an overcooked final half hour, as Bacon's obsessive, destructive hunt for answers becomes slightly ludicrous. The last scene is a real chiller, though.

Halliwell's Film Guide

Muddled supernatural thriller that is at its best when concentrating on the normal: the relationship of an unfulfilled working-class man, who is finding it difficult to cope with life, and his concerned wife.

really good movie!!!

ok first of all i think maybe this is the movie that sixth sense should have been!!!! although the main thread of the story is a little obvious, there are enough aspects of this movie that keep you guessing and therefore keep you interested through out, right too the end.If you like thrillers/ghost stories then your gonna love this!! I can't think why but for some reason this film reminds me of mystic river(could just be the location or something!!!) Well worth a go!

What Lies Beneath vs. Sixth Sense

A cross between the titles mentioned in my heading but unfortunately not meeting up to the standards each film reached. On one hand, you have spirit telling their story of wrongdoing and seeking retribution and on the other, you have a child star who is only too pleased that Dad can see 'them' also. An unusal way for father/son bonding but it does work for them so who am I to complain. An okay film with a supernatural edge but I'd suggest see the other films I've quoted for a better storyline and direction.

An intriguing ghost story with believable, down to earth characters. Nicely acted by all, especially Kevin bacon as the non-believer beset by psychic visions.

TOP MOVIE !!!

A Customer from GLASGOW, 4th March, 2006

In this supernatural thriller, Tom Witzky (Kevin Bacon) is a fairly typical working-class guy living in Chicago with his wife Maggie (Kathryn Erbe) and his son Jake (Zachary David Cope). One night at a party, Tom gets into a lively discussion with his sister-in-law, Lisa (Illeana Douglas), who believes in psychic communication and the power of hypnosis. He challenges Lisa to hypnotize him, and she plants in him a post-hypnotic suggestion to be more open-minded. But the results aren't quite what Lisa or Tom expected; Tom now senses an air of terrible dread throughout his house and is convinced that evil lurks just around the corner. He also sees the spirit of a girl from the neighborhood who disappeared months ago -- and Jake sees the spirit as well. Stir of Echoes was based on a novel by Richard Matheson, whose work inspired such disparate films as Somewhere in Time and The Incredible Shrinking Man; it was written and directed by David Koepp, who wrote the screenplays for Jurassic Park and Mission: Impossible.

Quite enjoyed this but you could see where it was going from the start. No real surprizes. Seen better, but ok if you want a film you don't really have to think about.

Kevin Bacon Brill once again. This film has twists and obsessions, you get to really feel for the character as he tries to prove something he thinks he knows. Although 10 years old this film is as good as any today in my opinion.

Ouch from , 5th August, 2009

I'm not sure if I'm reviewing this too late because I can't remember why this film is called Stir Of Echoes, unless I just missed something!!! This was a good film, my favourite sort of film. Pschological, a bit scary...suspense. A good twist. Not the best of it's kind but...worth a watch definately!

Slow & run of the mill

Very similar to a lot of other 'sixth sense' movies. Slow moving & run of the mill.
