A sweeping love story told by a man reading from his faded notebook to a woman in a nursing home. The Notebook follows the lives of two North Carolina teens from very different worlds. Though her upbringing takes places in an antebellum mansion and he grew up in the kind of house where musicians jam on the porch, that doesn't stop Noah and Allie from spending on incredible summer together before they are separated, first by her parents, and then by WW2.

Radio Times

A shameless tearjerker and as corny as they come, this retro romantic drama skilfully pushes all the right emotional buttons. The movie opens in the present day with elderly James Garner reading to nursing-home resident Gena Rowlands from an old notebook. We then flash back 60 years to the events chronicled in the journal — an ill-starred teenage romance between poor country boy Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, the daughter of rich city folk. There are no prizes for guessing the connection between the two couples. Slickly made by Rowlands's son, Nick Cassavetes, the film benefits from uniformly excellent performances from a quality cast that includes Joan Allen and Sam Shepard. Cassavetes should have taken his foot off the slush pedal more often, but if you're in the mood for melodrama, this three-tissue weepie could be just the ticket.

I am an action film lover, who secretly admits to loving this film, well directed and acted it makes it the ideal film for Sunday afternoons or for that romantic evening with your partner. I know that he will enjoy it too, but never admit it, WATCH and you will enjoy whether by yourself or with that someone special.

One For The Notebook

David Levy from Totteridge, London, 3rd February, 2005

In a genre like 'The Weepies', quality tends to stick out a million miles. In the years that have passed, who of us still consider a film like Beaches to be the barometer by which we measure all others? The quality in this film can easily be identified - the lead actors. While the story line is a familiar one, Ryan Gosling (so excellent in The Believer) and Rachel McAdams (ditto Mean Girls) inject so much heart into a movie about the heart, that it is almost impossible not to become emotionally involved. Perhaps another quality is the ending. While often we are left to our own devices, The Notebook is finite; with a definite start, middle and end. Indeed, this only serves to drive the story, and plug at our heartstrings. I can imagine the book from which this film is adapted to be very female orientated, but The Notebook is a fine film, and should be seen and enjoyed by all. It is so refreshing to see such quality in a type of film generally flushed with none, and that oil certainly makes it rise to the top of a river of mediocrity.

Nice film, sweet story. Good to remind ourselves that older people are human beings with lives too.

A really pleasant surprise

A Customer from South East England, 13th April, 2006

Added the film to the list, having never heard of it but impressed by some of the reviews. Well they are right. The acting is excellent, would have to be convincing or the plot would seem pure cheese. Tugged at the heartstrings in many ways, my wife needed 3 hankies! One of the few films that made me think about my relationship with my children and wife and emphasise just how important it is to let those close to you know how special they are.

Not just for girls

mick1963 from , 1st March, 2010

I'm a bloke in my 40's and rented this mainly for my wife but found myself quite enjoying it also. There's nothing groundbreaking about The Notebook its just a beatifully filmed old fashioned period(1940's) romance, with the tried & trusted poor boy meets rich girl formula.

Poignant

A difficult condition treated very well. It took a while to get going and was somewhat predicable but it was nevertheless an enjoyable film.
