Radio Times

This submarine drama marks the first screen appearance of Jack Ryan, the US agent subsequently played by Harrison Ford in Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger and, more recently, by Ben Affleck in The Sum of All Fears . Here, Ryan (Alec Baldwin) plays a distinct second fiddle to the Russian commander (a charismatic Sean Connery) who sparks an international crisis when he starts heading his sub straight for the USA. As the superpowers engage in the usual round of accusations and denials, it's left to Ryan to figure out whether the Russian is defecting or preparing to attack. The talented supporting cast (Sam Neill, Tim Curry, Joss Ackland, James Earl Jones, Scott Glenn) gives a pleasing sheen to the material, while John McTiernan's no-frills direction ensures that the tension rarely slips below pressure-cooker level.

Halliwell's Film Guide

An intermittently suspenseful thriller, stronger on hardware than human interest.

My Favourite film EVER!

From a book by my favourite author as well.

This one keeps you on the edge of your seat as Marco Ramius (Sean Connery) runs from the Soviet Navy in the latest submarine built by them.

It runs silent but one man has a notion that it is not a threat, Ramius and others may be trying to defect and bringing with them a prize no one dreamed of.

Alec baldwin plays Ryan the CIA analist who comes up with the defection idea and then sets about trying to make it happen. (Baldwins error is not making the follow up films in the Clancy series)

Gripping fast paced action!

Perfect !

MeTo from Surrey, 25th February, 2005

Truly excellent story, brilliant acting, great special effects, and fabulous surround sound.

This really does have to be up there as one of the best ever movies.

Sean was prefect for the role, some how you forgot Scots and thought Rusian!

What more could anyone ask for in a great night in front of the tele!

A great film.....

Knotty from West Yorkshire, 4th January, 2004

I have always been a fan of the Tom Clancy books and this film lives up to the expectations I had. Sean Connery proves why he is one of the best all-time actors around. The suspense is so great that you will be sitting on the edge of your seat. While it will never be the best film around, you can guarantee it'll be the next on the list!

funny

Sean Connery's accent was hilarious, as was the, slightly slow on the uptake, crew member who yelled 'I think someone's shooting torpedos at us!' I don't think Red October was supposed to be funny, but it was...

Good film

blackaj69 from , 15th September, 2009

It is a good film and if you can get past Sean not talking in a russian accent and just sticking to the normal accent he talks in then it is a not bad film. Give it a go.
