It more or less covers the same ground as the original, but this direct-to-video sequel is just as dynamic and fast-paced as its predecessor, with director Bradford May taking more than a few leaves out of the Sam Raimi style book. Arnold Vosloo — wrapped in bandages in 1999's The Mummy — takes over from Liam Neeson as the synthetic mask-wearing Dr Peyton Westlake, battling his resurrected nemesis Durant (Larry Drake) who has taken over the city's rackets with the help of a hi-tech ray gun. The formula is 1940s pulp fiction with a twist of black comedy and some superior special effects, but it all works like a charm in this effective reprise. Darkman III: Die Darkman Die followed in 1996.
