French director Jean-Xavier de Lestrade won an Oscar for this account of black teenager Brenton Butler's ordeal after being charged with the murder of a 65-year-old woman in a Florida motel. Outrage is the initial response, but indignant jubilation takes over as public defender Pat McGuinness exposes both the institutional racism within the Jacksonville police department and the flaws in a legal system that could allow such a prosecution to reach trial. Lestrade clearly takes sides, but his concern for the boy and his pious parents is evident and his presentation of the courtroom revelations is highly suspenseful.
