James Bond heads East to save the world (and to learn how to serve saki properly) in this action-packed espionage adventure. When an American spacecraft disappears during a mission, it's widely believed to have been intercepted by the Soviet Union, and after a Russian space capsule similarly goes missing, most consider it to be an act of American retaliation. Soon the two nations are at the brink of war, but British intelligence discovers that some sort of UFO has crashed into the Sea of Japan. Agent 007, James Bond (Sean Connery) is sent in to investigate. After staging his own death to avoid being followed, Bond, disguised as a Japanese civilian, teams up with agent Tiger Tanaka (Tetsuro Tamba) and his beautiful associate Aki (Akiko Wakabayashi). With their help, Bond learns that both the American and Russian space missions were actually scuttled by supercriminal Ernst Blofeld (Donald Pleasance) in yet another bid by his evil empire SPECTRE to take over the world. As he battles the bad guys, Bond finds time to romance both Kissy Suziki (Mie Hama) and Helga Brandt (Karin Dor). You Only Live Twice was one of Sean Connery's last outings as James Bond. The next Bond film, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, would star George Lazenby as 007, and while Connery would return for Diamonds Are Forever, in 1973, Roger Moore took over the role. (Connery would play Bond one last time, in 1983's Never Say Never Again, which was produced outside the official series.) ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Radio Times

One of the very best of the Bonds, boasting a jaw-dropping pace and impeccable action sequences amid stunning scenery. Sean Connery, in slyly macho mode as 007, goes on a mission to Japan to take on crime syndicate Spectre and its evil boss Blofeld (Donald Pleasence). Director Lewis Gilbert ensures no expense is spared (no wonder Blofeld's cat is a luxurious Persian) and designer Ken Adam puts that production money where his volcano is. As a bonus, one of the writers is Roald Dahl. Eat your bargain-basement heart out, Pierce Brosnan!

Halliwell's Film Guide

The Bond saga at its most expensive and expansive, full of local colour and in-jokes, with an enormously impressive set for the climactic action.

THE BEST CONNERY/BOND FILM, PEROID!

A Customer from NEWCASTLE - MY NAME IS NOT BOND, JAMES BOND, 24th June, 2004

' You Only Live Twice' is the 5th official 007: James Bond film and it is the best of the Sean Connery era. although ' Goldfinger' the third Bond film is great it is second best bond of the Connery era after this movie. with a screenplay by non - other than Roald Dahl{author of ' Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Boy: Tales OF Childhood, Going Solo, Fantastic Mr Fox} who makes this film the PIPE DREAM for a Bond movie. the original story in Ian Fleming's book of the same title about Blofeld's Garden Of Death is replaced with a story about a space station hidden inside a volcano which is more loyal to Fleming's ' Moonraker' novel. The film still sticks to the book's location: Japan. producers Harry Saltzman & Albert R ' Cubby' Broccoli put every penny on the screen once more. there is a very sketchy but interesting character in that of Helga Brandt{but Roald Dahl for all his brilliance could have padded out her character a bit more.}
All in all if your into hi - tech bond films this is the one for you. with two great Bond girls the sweet and gutsy Aki { she's IN LOVE with Bond}to the also feisty agent Kissy Suzuki{Suzuki is the name of a car - maybe Fleming loved Suzukis and felt like kissing them? - hm...} this film also stars Charles Gray as Mister Henderson who also did an excellent job of making a really creepy version of Ernst-Stavro-Blofeld in 1971's ' Diamonds Are Forever' which is another review altogether!, must see!

This is where it went a bit Austin Powers

superjim from from Durham, UK, 13th June, 2007

This is the first movie to deivate on to a sci-fi ish and smutty one-liner tangent, from the bloody fantastic Ian Fleming books, leading from here to Die another Day. I feel it's a shame the movies don't follow the books closer. But complaint aside hollowed-out volcanoes and armed microlytes are part of the Bond legend. If your a new Bond fan or want to see wnat inspired Austin Powers then watch this!

Classic Bond

A Customer from Northwich, 25th July, 2009

Sean Connery at his best. This film is the last of the first run of Sean Connery bond movies before his brief return in Diamonds are Forever. Good Story, good scenary, rgeat music. Very ivocative of the late 60s culture.

Simply the best

This is Sean Connery at his very best. Combined with the performance of Donald Pleasance this is the perfect recipe for a great James Bond film. If you wondered where Mike Myers got the inspiration for the fantastic Austin Powers films, then look no further than here! It's all of his films and so much more...
